Just in case any of you might be affected by this recall, it applies to brand names I listed in the title and includes dog, cat, and ferret food. Thank you - I hadn’t heard, and just picked up a new bag of CA Natural. I’ll have to check the lot number before I open it.
ETA Looks like I’m good, I feed the lamb and rice and it’s not on the list.

Now I’m freaking out. I’m just trying to decide what food to get for my dog. I have been feeding her Purina (don’t attack, its what the rescue gave her and I didn’t want to upset her stomach since it is already delicate!). I’ve been reading a lot about ingredients in dog foods and am really disgusted by some of it.
Theres no way of knowing if a brand (and some of the ones listed above are expensive!) will get recalled though, right? I just started my girl on Natures Variety Prairie Valley. She likes it so far, and it hasn’t been listed. Apart from reviews etc is there anywhere else I can get info?

I feed Blue Buffalo Wilderness - its grain-free. So far, no recalls 
Having worked at a grocery store, it is astounding the amount of recalls that come in daily. Sometimes for the same products lines - over and over again. It’s not just pet food.
I will never eat trail mix again - too many recalls.

The choices are overwhelming, and you start reading about what is in dog food and it gets scary. And the recalls…after I signed up for the emails at dogfood advisor.com and started getting them so frequently, I was shocked!
Keep in mind too that some recalls are more concerning than others. Salmonella is really more of a risk to us than to the dogs; wash your hands after you feed your dog, and don’t feed yourself dog food.

Thanks! I tried a search and did not come up with anything directly related to dog food…it was mostly working student threads (??) lol. The choices are extremely overwhelming, and different advisor websites seem to give opposite advice, though they do agree that grocery store dog food sucks. ugh.

yeah, I really don’t pay much attention to the salmonella recalls- every time you buy chicken at the grocery store it’s almost certainly contaminated with salmonella, does that stop you from buying it? no, you just handle it correctly and you’re fine.
Recalls that are revealing serious quality-control problems with a particular company or problems with particular ingredients are of more interest.
Nature’s variety seems to be pretty good, quality-wise.
Argh! I wish I’d seen this right when it was posted. We just had doggie at the vet weds after five days of diarreah. She is on Innova. I will be bagging up what’s left and having a sample tested. My kitty snacks out of the dog dish and also had the runs for a couple days until I took the dog food away and started the rice diet to stop the runs.
She’s been on blue buffalo and wouldn’t eat it. The Innova is the first non-junk brand she’s been willing to eat regularly.
Poor puppy. I’m so mad!
You gotta love all these people who tout & buy all this high-priced organic/whatever pet food; yet for some strange reason, they always seem to be getting recalled. Go figure.

I used to think that too but then I started looking into ingredients of grocery store dog food and reading reviews, which scared me. A lot. Not to mention that one of the brands consistently listed in recalls is a more popular “grocery store” brand. I’m lucky because there is a great local pet store here which sells select higher end brands at a price I can afford and seems on top of recalls etc through email communication and websites.

For what it’s worth, the brands mentioned were actually sold a while ago to a different company (Proctor & Gamble), who also makes a lot of lower quality pet foods such as Iams. Many people predicted the downfall of Innova and the previously well-thought of Natura pet foods. I don’t think this in particular is a huge deal - like I said, a salmonella recall doesn’t worry me much, when I’ve fed my dogs raw before. But these are no longer really considered “top of the line” pet foods by a lot of people.
I personally don’t think P&G had anything to do with this. I may be wrong. But I know someone who was given the full tour of the Natura facility less than a year ago (so under P&G ownership). She said they were very careful with their production and that it was very tightly regulated. She is not an employee of Natura so I don’t think she had any reason to be untruthful.
If it were me, I wouldn’t switch brands just because of this. Nature Variety and Blue Buffalo have both had recalls in the past. It depends to me on what the cause was. For example, Diamond’s huge recalls last year were from some really negligent practices. They were just asking for salmonella contamination. But Nature’s Variety seems to be a pretty decent brand and Natura has more food safety certificates than any other brand. They take a lot of pride in their production. So it worries me less than a recall born out of sloppiness/cutting corners.
