Hello, first time post, just ran across this thread because I am searching for info on springtails and for that matter this thread will never be too old. And I can contribute some information. I am in the beginning of an infestation of springtails, they are very small and up close look like a very small version of a cockroach and usually come up in kitchen sinks and bathtubs, septic systems yes, if a septic system is the issue it is time for a pump out and flush and the drains need to be treated, from what I read here the foam sounds very interesting and will probably work, but this does pt-cykick. Why you see the springtails is because they are looking to make new nests, they prefer damp, moist areas (like a septic tank), but can and will make a nest under cabinets, corners, anywhere, so treating as soon as you see them is vital, they are harmless, don’t bite and don’t eat wood, but they can become a nuisance and a big one at that if left untreated. If not a septic system, you can have them come in around doors and windows, they like weeds, tall grass, under decking, behind siding, a good insecticide treatment around perimeter of home should be done anyway before any problem starts. For the people on here that get their tanks pumped 6 or 12 years, well great, good for you, but you are playing Russian roulette and at anytime your system can stop working, a new system now usually consists of 2 tanks with a effluent pump to a distribution tank, dirt, rocks, piping, 11 to 15 grand, a mound system can go upwards of 18 to 27 thousand, gravity systems are things of the past, very few installers will even consider it, I had a whole new system installed 2 years ago, the wife and I and 2 dogs, I’ve been here 11 yrs and from my calculations the system lasted 39 years, the neighbors 40 years, they say a good system that’s well taken care of will last at least 15 years. Best bet, take a look once in awhile, you know what full means, it should never be FULL, lol, never put grease down the drain, wipe your pans with a paper towel before you wash, bleach - no. I’ve been told by the installer that adding treatments to your septic system does nothing, that its all hogwash, nothing has ever been proven, up to you if you feel better doing it. One other thing, septic systems all depend on your soil, if you have a lot of sand, you will definitely be able to skip some years, but if you have a lot of clay, then make sure to have it pumped out regularly.
