Ex-lab animal adoption

Hi all,

Many of you know I recently adopted 2 off-study mice that I worked. This was very supported by the private vivarium who housed them.

Currently, our rodents are housed at Duke U because the Duke facility we contracted with isn’t ready. They also have an adoption program and I “met” a beagle today in that program.

I’d encourage people to contact local vivaria and Universities to adopt animals. Most of the adoptees have been handled regularly, come with a veterinarian clean bill of health, the people involved will talk to you-including the vet-about that specific animal and deserve a great retirement home. Many of the vets encourage you to check in with them and will answer questions you have for the life of the animal.

No matter how you feel about lab animals, you can give some a great retirement and the labs love this.

Just putting this on peoples’ radar. I didn’t realize it until I adopted 2 off-study mice. They are doing so well and love to be held now that they know that holding doesn’t mean injections anymore.

My mom just adopted a cat that came from a lab. We don’t know much history except the cat was evaluated to be in a study involving spay/neutering with medicine rather than surgery. Cat failed the intake evaluation and was sent north to the shelter where we adopted her.
