Exercise Riders- Which boots?

I’m taking the plunge and going back to galloping. I thought there was a thread about this already, but I can’t find it.

Which (human) boots does everyone love for galloping? I sincerely hate my old ones. They were hand-me-downs from another rider and broken in for her, so they dug into my ankles.

Thanks!

Ariat always ariat paddock boots. I do protect my lower leg from burns with a long sock and a thingy that was designed for shin splints in people. I burn terribly without when riding long.

I had always galloped in Kroops… then switched to paddock boots, got sick of the laces breaking, and went with jodpher boots (the zip up ones)… I used leggings (the elastics) and chaps in the winter!

It also depends upon the track regulations. I have seen people at Pimlico galloping in tennis shoes but at Penn we could only wear boots that pulled on and off, no laces. Check into the requirements if any so you aren’t stuck with something you aren’t allowed to ride in.

My boots now are Kroops. Yeah, I still have scars from burning so bad (they are soooo attractive when one is wearing a skirt). Then I started using a pair of big socks folded down to cover the part of my leg that rubbed and half chaps and that helped a ton.

Laurierace- if I rode in tennis shoes our outrider would yank me off the horse! Other than that there are not too many other regulations on footwear- at least in the mornings.

I wear Mountain horse boots now for regular riding but they’re tall and that won’t work for galloping. Talk about comfy, though. The other problem is that the Mountain horse paddock boots have a lot of traction on the soles.

I suggest a pair of leggings, the ones that the jocks wear…

As I got older, paranoia started to creep in, and I wanted a boot that would slip off if I ever got hung up… I’d seen to many “accidents”!

Also, I see kids riding with chaps with the straps that go around the bottom of their boots… drives me crazy… they could never wiggle out of their boots if they ever got stuck.

The worst burn I ever got was a pair of non lace ups. Still have the scar. My chaps have the under the boot thing. I like it. I do cringe when I see the keepers wired closed on a saddle. I’ve not had the getting hung up experience (knock on wood) but don’t mind the chap keepers. Chaps are sticky as compared to jeans. Keeps one stuck like velcro…:D. As long as they are going forward and are alive, I am sticking!

I’m with you on the wiring the keepers wired shut…

Add to the list of excersise riding…(wrong thread but worth mentioning)!

ALWAYS check your tack!

Years ago I went to work for a leading trainer, he used nylon bridles in the a.m…

Every keeper on the bridles had electric tape around them… I was joking with another rider about what the buckles looked like under them, so we decided to check one morning… we came to find out that some of them were actually missing buckles… not good, not good at all!

Yup, I cringe at tape as well… The true job of an exercise rider is to learn to avoid disaster for horse and rider.

jodphur boots and leggings for me. cheers, alex

I used to gallop in Blundstones with leggings and half chaps. I like the Blunnies a lot!!! Slip on and also really comfortable. And leggings are a must!! I still ride in them on my show horses and exercising the foxhunters.

My husband and I both gallop in plain old cheap Justin lace ups with over the calf socks and leggings and then we wear full chaps. You could spend the money for Kroops, and don’t get me wrong, they are nice, but we just prefer to gallop in lace ups.

Elastic leggings a must. Other than that, I liked Blundstones or Ariat zip ups; found lace ups with hooks annoying. Half chaps in nice weather, fullchaps for cold weather. Well cushioned socks always.
