It started at 1 am CDT. By 2 or 2:30 we had seen three women’s saber fencing bouts, badminton, and had a soccer game scheduled for next up.
No eventing. But exhaustion.
Damn NBC, anyway.
My computer equipment is too old for the live stream, and broadband not available in my house from any source but satellite, which I don’t have.
Suggestions for a better Olympics experience?
Oh, so what I’m TRYING to figure out and see now isn’t weird? Good. I gave up last night around 1:30am MT because I was tired. I saw all you did.
I just commented on the live thread feed that I’m not impressed with either the online OR the TV coverage. I’ve not been happy with NBC’s coverage for quite a while (look what they do at the Derby. It’s not about the horses, trainers, or sport at all. They’d rather find the celebrities and talk about hats & fashion) :mad: :no:
My on demand schedule thing said it was supposed to be after beach volleyball. Nope, weightlifting.

If you’d just stayed tuned after the badminton was finished (I didn’t know hitting that little feathered rubber ball with small rackets could be so engrossing!) you could have seen one hour of eventing dressage on USA channel!
Yes, between 4 and 5 a.m. EDT when the women’s football match began (yea USA!) they showed an hour of dressage!! I about fell off the couch with surprise!
They showed M Todd, Amy Tryon, Clayton Fredericks, Daisy Dicks, a Canadian, and maybe one more before switching over to the soccer match at 5!
Melanie Smith did a good job of commentating I thought…it’s been years since I heard her and I think she has improved…

well, I slept 'till 9am this morning (vs. my usual 6am), so maybe I’ll be able to stay up tonight. I still think the fact our sport is shunned to a time slot that they know people will be tucked tightly in their beds is stupid, though
I’m recording everything just in case. Thank heavens for a DVR.
Off now to watch last night, and fast forward past all the other stuff.

Darn, I missed the dressage coverage, I guess there is no chance of them running it again on another channel… By the schedule I have there is no more equestrian coverage until Monday. Does anyone know of anything else?
Tonight on USA from midnight (MT, anyway) on to early morning hours.
I thought 40 minutes of eventing dressage, each test presented in its entirety, was pretty darned good.
Oh, and while writing this comment I realized there’s another 40 minutes in the segment that’s showing now. The Chinese rider was really very lovely, and Becky and Comet had a lovely test.
They showed parts of the first and third group, so I think we can expect probably one or two more sessions “tomorrow” for some value of tomorrow.
An hour and a half of eventing dressage is a freaking miracle as it is. 
I wonder if we’ll be able to buy DVDs that are complete. You think they’d think of doing that.
I did send an email to NBC begging them to break the coverage into shorter segments. 7 hours is a lot to record; I don’t know if I’ll be able to keep up with it.
DH thought it was hilarious that the commentators didn’t even get a trip to Hong Kong, but were commenting from New York.
To those complaining about the coverage, I dunno how many summer olympics you’ve lived through, but this is the first time there has ever been more than a blink of equestrian (heaven forbid dressage) gasp shown on TV. They used to broadcast the jumping finals as the last event very early Sunday morning when nobody was watching, but that was it. This morning there was a full hour of eventing dressage, fer pete’s sake. Eventing dressage! How many Americans do you think have a clue what it even is??
If you can’t get the live feed on your computer, then find a computer/connection that can play it, because it’s excellent. If you missed it live Friday night, you can right now see the rewind of the entirety of the first day of eventing dressage rides. The whole potato. I have a 2 year old laptop, XP, Firefox and comcast cable internet–hardly a cutting edge system–and I’m getting an excellent feed. Several Mac users have not had a problem getting it. So the technical issues are at the individual computer end.
The BEST thing to do is to give GOOD feedback to NBC from as many of us as possible to encourage this sort of access in the future. Face it, equestrian sport isn’t bigtime in the US and they have no idea anybody wants to see it.
So tell them they’re doin’ good. I hope those of you who can’t make the live feed work can figure a workaround. It’s well worth it.

It’s not exact, but gives a general idea of when the programming will occur.
I’ve watched enough to know that if you stay up into the wee hours of darkness, you CAN and DO see much more than a snippet of eventing dressage. As of yet, I have not been able to see any on television. Granted, I could no longer stay awake and missed it, but I will try again tonight.
I am currently watching the replay of last night’s live feed, and it is better than last night. For one thing, it’s not buffering every 5-7 seconds. That was a big reason I stopped trying to watch yesterday evening.
Yes, it’s an improvement, but such a minute one that those who aren’t horse people are still saying “they actually show the equestrian stuff?” Meanwhile, the world gets to watch over an hour of weightlifting. Sure it’s cool, and I’m happy for the people who are involved in that sport, but the fact remains that NBC still would rather snub the horse people than show the video replay of the horses on TV.

on the dvr, and am about to edit the eventing dressage onto a tape where I will keep the end version of these Olympics. I do seem to remember they did show all the eventing dressage in Athens. Where I fell in love with Galan De Sauvage who I hear has sadly been withdrawn.
I have a slow computer but I am going to my moms tonight and I think hers is high speed.
But she has no cable to speak of.
USA had about an hour of dressage at 9:45 this morning. I was shocked to see it. But glad I got to see Becky Holder’s ride! 
We had fabulous, full coverage this morning-I guess it was around 8:30 or 9. We saw at least 10 horses go-the young Chinese guy on the grey made me weep-it was wonderful coverage. I don’t know who the female commentator is but I thought she was fairly knowledgeable and did a good job. She made the scoring-throughout-the-weekend quite clear for the uninformed.
It says we’ll have more dressage on TV tomorrow morning at 7:15. I hope it won’t be at 2 am but I won’t stay up to watch it. You can also watch it on your computer.
I ordered BoldTv here in Canada, I would assume it’s available in the States as well? They are covering every class of every equestrian event which is pretty awesome!
Lucinda’s test was absolutely amazing!! Her husband’s was as well, loved his horse! Looking forward to watching the cross country tomorrow night…I think I may be all dressage’d out at this point lol

That’s Melanie Smith Taylor, SJ gold medalist and commentator for NBC for many Games now.
I am making a tape from TiVo as well, and I already have an hour and a half clocked onto it. I’m going to need some more tapes.
I had to work last night but set my Tivo to record the Opening Ceremonies and the two sessions that mentioned dressage. I settled in today for my marathon Olympic watching session and found that the cable box apparently went out last night, and my Tivo recorded hours and hours of black screen.

I would love to watch the live feed, but it just keeps buffering every 5-7 seconds. And I have no idea how to fix it.
