I have a 15.3 Oldenburg mare by Bugatti Hilltop out of an Art Deco mare who is 14 and I’m breeding for the first time. I’d like to know about people’s experiences with breeding to Popeye at HIlltop Farms? I’m particularly interested in the temperaments of the babies – how easy to handle are they? Any problems people have had? Anything you wish you’d known before? This will be my first time breeding, and I’m an amateur rider though I’ve shown to 3rd level and ridden my whole life. Thanks in advance.
Along with whatever you learn from posters here, Natalie at Hilltop will be a great resource for you. Especially with a mare by one of their stallions, she will have great insight not only into Popeye’s get but also into good nicks for Bugatti’s female offspring. She is highly motivated to help people breed for what they want. And she knows her stuff.
I’ve had four Popeye babies. Three that I personally bred. One is a licensed stallion. They are smart babies and easy to break and ride. I raised all of mine doing sport horse in hand and young horse shows. They are competitive against horses as well as ponies, and well behaved for youngsters. Natalie at Hilltop can give you more info. There are a lot of Popeye offspring.
Thank you for these responses. I’ve definitely been speaking to Hilltop directly, but just wanted to solicit unbiased reports before I made a final decision! So far so good.
