What type of footing did you put on top of the grids? What would you suggest? We are in the northeast. Horses will be barefoot.
We are building another barn and we used Versigrid before, but husband is thinking of something else for footing this time. Last time we used sand, which I thought worked really well. The company is suggesting pea gravel or coarse gravel. I’m not happy with pea gravel, seems slippery to me.
Thoughts and suggestions?
ETA: This will be outside, in the stall runs.
I have Hoof-Grid and we topped ours with pea gravel originally and it was great. For some reason we tried screenings when we had to redo the gravel (you lose some and it gets mucky from bedding getting dragged out after a couple of years) and I HATED it. Completely clogged up what had been a fabulous draining paddock. Packed and was hell to remove but we did, swearing the whole time, and went back to pea gravel, which is wonderful. I do not find it slippery at all. We try to keep about 2" coverage over the grids and I’ve not had any issue with horses slipping. It can be hard to find good pea gravel around here, so last time I found some, I stockpiled extra to add in as needed. This is nice, round, ~3/8" diameter “peas.”
