Experiences with Broadstone/XL Specialty mortality/major medical coverage

I’m considering going with mortality and major medical coverage with XL Specialty through Broadstone. The coverage stacks up well and I like the option of waiving the copay on diagnostics. Anyone have claims experience with them in the last couple of years, good or bad??

I have used XL through Broadstone for a few years - very smooth working with them on major medical claims and they were very easy to deal with on A combined major medical/mortality claim last fall after my horsw suffered a catastrophic injury.

LOVE them.

Lad, my 15 yr old went inexplicably lame while on lease this summer and they’d covered him with major medical and surgical. He got the full battalion of tests done at New Bolton and though we still don’t have a conclusive answer why he was lame, they paid for almost all of it.

Bear in mind he was only insured as he was starting being leased, so only 3 months of coverage were in play when he went to NBC.

I have been very impressed by them. And they save me a ton on my liability policy compared to other companies.

I have used Broadstone and XL in the past and had excellent experiences.

Same here. Broadstone and XL have served me well.

Thanks for the feedback. Their quote and coverage seemed like the best of my options, but that means nothing if the claims experience is a nightmare, so it is great to hear that people have had good experiences. My retired horse maxed out two separate policies with two separate injuries so I’m all too familiar with how important it can be!

Unfortunately, I’ve done a large major medical and a mortality through Broadstone/XL. They were amazing to deal with - compassionate and efficient.

I use them as well for my horse, and had to max out my annual major medical policy this past year. They were fantastic - very easy to work with. I submitted my vets paperwork after each exam we did to an underwriter at XL, and usually a check was in the mail to me within a week, no questions asked. This included for a 90 day extension period at the end of the 12 month policy period. Providing a copy of the notes & bills directly from your vet is key.

Similar experience here, no complaint whatsoever. However, I’m curious, twelvebelles, what your renewal process was like. For us, the premium doubled, deductible increased, and my exclusions page reads like a dictionary. This was the first time I’d needed to avail myself of horse insurance so maybe this is the norm but it was shocking to me.

XL has handled 2 claims very well for me. Very happy!

Amazing to see so much positive feedback about insurance claims

Renewal as a process was easy but costs did go up some. I just looked at the paperwork and the mortality premium was the same, the major medical premium and the deductible were both up $100 and there was a copay for diagnostics (which I didn’t have before). I paid an extra $150 to waive that copay requirement just because after my experience last year I KNOW I would far exceed $150 in diagnostics and it would be worth it.

The only listed exclusion is my horses injury and any related medical claims (mortality is still covered). I was surprised by that, but they said that because it was a) an acute injury and not chronic and b) a very specific injury, the exclusion was therefore very specific and limited to the affected area of the injured leg only. Also, I was told if he has no ill effects in the future and returns to normal workload without issues, in a couple years I can request the exclusion be removed (although it would require a vet examination of his leg I think). We will see if that holds true!

That’s good to know! We had a nonspecific, NQR issue that took a lot of diagnostics and a bit of trial and error to correct. So perhaps that is why the medical premium doubled. I have hope, then, maybe, that if we don’t use it in the next few years they may remove the exclusions!

I bound coverage with XL and my new horse is on his way! Broadstone was great to work with, and I did a pretty detailed comparison of the XL coverage and the Great American coverage, and with the option of waiving the copay, XL’s coverage was definitely more comprehensive. Thanks for the feedback!

Amazing to see so much positive feedback about insurance claims [/QUOTE] I’ve had two sizable claims, one with Great American and another recent one with Markel, and they were both amazing and easy to deal with. Made my husband and I wonder if we could insure ourselves with them instead of our human health insurance policy!

I almost fell on the floor when they paid my horse’s entire $6K hospital bill for a weird abscess on his side. It was a total freak thing and the reason I have insurance is because I can’t afford total freak things. I was expecting to pay for most of it, when they sent me a letter saying they’d settled the bill, I think I cried. I renewed both horses this year.

LOVE LOVE LOVE them. Two claims on one horse last year, one major. They were fantastic to work with, both Broadstone and XL. My other horse was dropped by another company after a major claim and Broadstone was able to get him coverage with minimal exclusions. I too waived the copay on diagnostics on both horses, WELL worth the extra money.
