I really like sliding side reins, although I don’t have a pair. My trainer introduced them to me- she has a custom made surcingle for her sliding side reins and I absolutely love using them. They were good for my low set neck, prefer low head set horse that liked to lean on the reins.
Off to look up sliding reins…
LOL me too.
"The advantage of sliding side-reins compared to solid side reins is the possibility for the horse to stretch long and low to loosen its neck and long back muscle. Instead of being held in a shape, the horse has a certain frame it can move its neck and reach the position of self-carrying. In addition, the sliding side-reins provide more possibilities to adjust height, length and frame of movement."
My horses go long and low in normal side reins and are not held in a shape. They can move their heads and necks and reach a position of self carrying or not - Which was very evident the other day when next door were having a party and doing who knows what. Stars was able to go along like a giraffe instead of a dressage horse.
Normal side reins can be adjusted for height and length as well.
The more you know and the better you can execute it; the more you realize you don’t need any training aid.
What we all need is more knowledge, TIME, and patience.
That all said I’m sure a horse will now come find me to show me that they are the outlier.
Will also mention I do occasionally use one side rein when working in hand for piaffe work. Though I prefer to long line.
