Export from US to Australia

Hi -
Has anyone done this in recent times? Can you give an overview of what was involved and approximate costs?
thanks!

I just obtained a quote for this. I can email it to you if you want.

that would be great. SenecaRidge(at) msn.com

thanks
Nancy

Just sent it. Pour yourself a stiff drink first - it is pricey.

What exactly are you looking for? We’re in the process of literally filling two tanks for shipping to Australia at the moment. Are you looking for the costs associated with just the paperwork and shipping? Or are you looking at the costs associated with FREEZING for export?

Shipping/paperwork costs will be variable as if you are sending your semen out and are the only one involved, it will be more than say the shipment we’re doing today which is divided up amongst multiple stallions. Give me an idea of what exactly you are looking for and I can probably give you a pretty tight cost ;).

Ohhhhhhh…semen.

Oops…I guess it might NOT be semen but the horse itself? <lol>. My mistake, if that’s the case. If you’re looking at exporting a horse, nls, I have absolutely NO clue! :D!

About 25-30k last time I heard. Of course, depends on if mare, stallion, gelding…

We shipped 2 mares to AUS this past spring and it was $21K per mare (both IF) from IRT. Couldn’t find anything for much less…

thanks for all the replies! Yes, I was pricing shipping a horse for a potential purchaser. Looks like $20,000++ from LA. Since we are in Florida, I can easily see once you add in all the little details how it could easily pass $25,000. ( hm I wonder how that compares with Germany to Australia?) Sorry I wasn’t clear that it was for the whole animal, not just the little parts!

<ROTFL>…well, I have to say it’s a WHOLE lot cheaper shipping them in their “smaller” state!

Germany to aus is also pricey and the last time I heard about it people were talking about 20000 euro which is about 25000 use … But. Ever saw actual quotes so I might be wrong

We shipped one this year, and it was at least $20K plus extended quarantine costs once it arrived…and it was a gelding. Lots of red tape!

I got a quote a few months ago to ship my stallion there for Southern Hemisphere breeding duties

It was $26,000 and change going from New York and $28,000 going through Los Angeles. That encompassed paperwork, quarantine and shipping from here (east coast Canada) to either New York or LA

So - for me, going BOTH ways, I needed to count on about $60,000 round trip

Ouch!

Needless to say he WONT be wintering in Australia anytime soon!

I heard from a friend today that just shipped a foal from Germany to Australia. It was 21,000 euro which is a little over $28,000. Looks like we are the lower priced option even at those high prices!

The prices must have really increased in the past few years. I shipped a filly to AUS about 6 years ago and I can’t remember the exact price but I know it was much less than these quotes. The quarantine was substantial both here and also when she arrived in AUS. I used IRT http://www.irt.com/homeus.jsp?xcid=35 and they handled everything. The trip went smoothly and no headaches. :)

bluemoonfarms - I brought a young mare in from NZ about 4-5 years ago and paid just over $10,000 in shipping to IRT to get her from the Auckland airport to Los Angeles, quarantine for 3 days there and then come to the East Coast of Canada via transport. That was everything - all vet work, paperwork, flights, inland transportation - the works

Thats why I nearly died when I got the quotes now for $28,000!!! I mean I know fuel has gone up and everything, but Holy Moley!!!

We will be shipping two coming yearlings to Australia and another horse next year. All three will be shipped from Canada, if you want to send me an email I have a package I received from the shipping company I can forward to you if you like as it is contains allot of information and the price breakdown.

There is only one company I could find in NA that handles shipping horses to Australia- IRT. We are unable to have the horses do the NA quarantine here in Canada this has to be done in either KY or CA.

The price per horse is just under US$ 23,000.00 this includes the quarantine costs in NA and also NZ the quarantine in NZ is over $ 6,000.00 which is included in the total price.

It seems IRT has shipments going to Australia every 4 to 6 weeks year round.

bluemoonfarm and TrueColours: One of the big factors for the prices sky rocketing was from the EI outbreak that basically stopped the racing industry. The goverenement put in massive new quarantine rules and paperwork. Doubled the price and doesn’t make a lot of sense in importing broodmares into Aus from North America or Europe any more either. And this wasn’t just for horses. Try getting a dog into Australia. Expensive and not fun!

Nothing to add, but “holy crap.” OUCH
