Extra long saddle pad?

So I’m one of the lucky ones who has a husband that rides and competes along with me. He is 6’4 and his saddle is an 18’ County Stabilizer. He has always had trouble using off the rack saddle pads as the back of the saddle will sit right on the pad edge. He currently has the extra long Dover schooling pads (that were around $30), but they appear to now be discontinued. Does anyone know where I can find extra long pads that won’t break the bank?

Just to clarify, it needs to be extra long across the spine, not the drop. Thanks!

When I started my current lesson horse it quickly became apparent to me that his loin was STIFF and hurting some.

I looked on the web for extra long saddle pads that would fix this problem and I ended up with a Fenwick Western saddle pad. The top of this pad in non-slip, it does not have straps attaching it to the saddle, but I have yet to have it move under the saddle.

It covers his loin, he is happier and therefore I am happier.

I have the Ogilvie baby pad sometimes with a large Mattes sheepskin half pad with no back roll, under my 18 inch dressage saddle that has back gussets. I have LeMeiux pads under my 18 inch jump saddle. I feel like the dressage saddle is bigger. Also I need a long drop on the dressage pad.

I have never found a budget pad that is really big enough especially after washing so I went with just having two each of Ogilvy and LeMeiux and have been very happy.

Following this one, as I have the same issue with my 17.5 County XLR. I had three Wilkers pads I sold for this very reason.

Try PS of Sweden. My saddle is only 17”, but the pads have a ton of space behind them. I actually worried they would look too long, but my horse is a dinosaur so they’re in proportion with him at least.

Check out NuuMed pads. https://nuumed.com/ I also ride in an 18" saddle and the large size is perfect. They also come in extra large if your saddle is longer than mine. (Not all 18" saddles are the same length.) You can order directly or PM me if you want to order through a US based company.

Ogilvy makes extra long saddle pads, intended to fit saddles over 18”: https://www.ogilvyequestrian.com/en/store/product/jump-profilepad

Some tack stores do now carry sizes but I have had the most luck ordering directly from them.

Good to know that I’m not the only one with this problem! It makes me wonder why more equestrian companies don’t offer extra long options. The Ogilvy looks like a great option. Thank you Mouse! It isn’t cheap, but it will work.

I too vote for Ogilvy. We found standard pads were too small for 2Gs, Ogilvy large was perfect. Added bonus is that they wash amazingly well.

Good to know about the Ogilvy option! I’m still bummed that Dover discontinued the extra-long mini-quilt one they used to carry - it was a bargain and held up great.

EcoGold come in a couple different lengths (a quick look at their website shows a 23" spine length) and will also make you a custom pad for a truly hard-to-fit saddle. I had them do one for my side saddle, and am quite happy with the result. They’re pricy, but last very well and the company offers wonderful customer service. I’ve got a bunch of their halfpads and shaped pads, and am pleased with all of them.

Yes, they are made of magic. I have white pads that are 3+ years old and they are still quite white!

PRI. They’re not quite as easy to find as they used to be, but they wash incredibly well, last forever, and I’ve never had a problem with my long/forward flaps and 17.5/18" seats with them. (I currently have an Innovation.)

They are my favorite saddle pads, I only buy them now. I have ones that are almost 10 years old and they still are in good shape.

FYI for anyone considering the Ogilvy - I emailed them yesterday to get the exact measurements on the large size. I had an email back from them first thing this morning (great service, I will be ordering!) and this is what they sent:

The measurements for the Jump Profile Pad Large are as follows.

Spine: 26”
Long: 20.5”

The measurement of the long is taken from the base of the withers down to the edge of the pad in line with the girth loops.

I have to chime in with another vote for Oglivy in that, they will stay the size you buy them, even after you wash them over and over. So did/do Toklat’s, but not sure they are even made anymore, or that they are quite big enough for your needs. There have been a few others that pass this test, but most pads I see annoyingly shrink over time.

Shoot- Ecogold will do custom sizing?! Man, I seriously missed an opportunity. I thought I had sized myself out of the product with my double forward long flap 18”.

OP, since you know this is an option, don’t be me… get one of these things. This is a super product, the company stands behind it, they last forever and they’re horse friendly.

Franconia baby pads are also big saddle friendly and last a long time- some of mine are going on 20 years. But they are quite thin, meant to be layered under something else, and don’t have spine contour.

JenEm, I’ve tried the PRI pads back in the day. I loved all the assorted colors, but they just weren’t long enough.

The Ecogold pads are really nice…and really expensive! My budget just can’t handle that much for a schooling pad. Now for shows? It might be worth it to splurge.

Ugh! Why oh why did Dover discontinue the cheap one? So economical and they never shrank on me. sigh

You all still have me leaning towards Ogilvy.

I had this problem with my 18.5 Stubben. I also used the Dover long pads but have since switched to the Lemieux CC pads. They fit my saddle like they were made for it and wash well in the machine. I have now bought 3 to have on hand.

I’ve seen the Dover ones on eBay, and have just stumbled across one on there (23 1/2" x 38") that appears to be lightly used. That might be a good place to find old stock or gently used ones, as well as other pads.

I ride in an 18" saddle and fortunately haven’t had much problems with most of my pads, but find that my Practical Choice (sadly no longer made), Roma, PRI, Perri’s, Waldhausen, and Wilker’s fit great. I have a Dover that is a thicker, polarfleece type material that fits well, also.
