Extreme anxiety, reactivity… I’m at a loss

Just as a note…my horse that I had to put down due to EDM (confirmed on necropsy) had no neuro symptoms until late in the diagnostic process. Initially when his anxiety and behavioral stuff started, he had zero neuro issues. By the end he was only 1.5-2 grade neuro…and that was with bilateral brainstem lesions on biopsy.

Not saying your situation is that…but don’t make decisions based on the “they don’t look neuro” with some of the neuro (EPM and EDM) conditions. They all present a little differently. Good luck with finding answers…I’ve been there with a few and it’s hard!

I’ve had 2 horses with ulcers that were both extremely spooky. With spooky behavior I always assume it to be ulcers until proven otherwise. Start with that first.

I’m still thinking pssm or pssm 2. My pssm type 2 mare cross canters behind whenever her muscles get tight.

I had a mare on lease that came in skinny… I put her on the best hay and a cup of oil in the morning and night. I thought she had ulcers so started treatment for that… I didn’t know what was wrong with her until she tied up one day just out in the pasture. Her muscle disease was something different than my other horse. The owner opted to pick up the mare so I never did find out what was wrong with her other then she was prone to tying up. She was a beautiful horse but clearly not well. I was pouring feed into her with minimal improvement in weight.

My type 2 pssm mare has a poor top line and poor musculature in her hind quarters. That seems pretty consistent regardless of how much feed she gets. However, she’s not particularly difficult to keep weight on and neither horse was reactive/spooky.

When she gets startled does she buck? Or buck at the canter? My pssm mare did a lot when she was started under saddle- it was a reaction to the muscle tightness. Fortunately she’s a good girl under saddle and never tried to get anyone off. She was just trying to say “I can’t do this!” As long as you listen to her, she tells you how she is feeling and you adjust the ride accordingly.

Muscle diseases can be very difficult to figure out as you would need a muscle biopsy and the genetic test for type 1 pssm.

I would also get her teeth checked if you haven’t done so already.

Watching a friend go through EDM with her WB mare is the reason I genuinely do not think it is worth the risk to ride some horses, at least until you figure out what’s wrong. And even then only to a reasonable limit. That mare nearly hurt her so many times, she kept trying to “fix” her even when it was obvious she was not fixable. My friend has small kids. It was stupid of her to ride that horse as long as she did, and stupid to even handle her on the ground near the end.

Stifles or sacrum? She leaves her hind legs way too far out behind her in all gaits

Just lost my lovely 9 yo QH to EDM. We had him for 3 yrs. First two yrs were great, lots of my 2 grandkids riding and showing him at Intro level. He was always twitchy and head shy. We chalked it up to the 7 owners prior to us buying him. Vet pulled blood after we had had him 6 months and he was very Vit E deficit. We supplemented Vit E and kept pulling blood. He seemed to be ok with that and Magnesium supplement. Then he became spooky in April, bolted with my granddaughter causing dislocation of her elbow.
Treating vet did neuro exam, recommended we take him to New Bolton. Waited 2 months to get into NB. We stopped riding him during that wait. He was at New Bolton for 3 days with extensive neurological testing. New Bolton vet recommended euthanasia although his symptoms were still considered mild 1.5-2. Took him home, waited for insurance to approve euthanasia providing there was necropsy results. Took him back a couple of weeks later, necropsy showed signs of EDM/eNAD and New Bolton vet reported that the day we took him back to NB for the last time, he was much more spooky and reactive only a few weeks from his complete workup. Just our recent sad experience with a horse demonstrating few neuro symptoms.
