Our local animal control has been telling people to “let the animals go where you found them so they can find their own way home.” They will flat out not take animal surrenders.
[/quote]

**they have been doing that in my area too. They do absolutely anything and everything in their power to avoid taking in any animals.

I guess taking in more animals equals more work for shelter employees.
I suspect staff at shelters should be
Rotated out of the job when they reach the point of not caring.
Happens here in my area too.

I think being a shelter employee is one of those jobs where nothing they do will ever be right enough.

If they allow any/all animals to be dropped off then they will simply be euthanizing that many more animals, then society will be mad at them for killing all the puppies and kitties.

We (general) can not have it both ways. We can not demand no kill and also demand endless space for drop off.

The current trend of not spaying has not helped this problem.
The number of posts is astronomical that I read on Facebook where people are shocked that their in heat female locked with their intact male dog or their never been spayed indoor/outdoor cat is pregnant with her third litter and is not even two yet…

It’s not that it’s more work. The issue is no kill. They can’t euthanize anything for space because it counts against their no kill statistics. So then they lose grant money and they lose other things that they like to have. So unfortunately, animals just get warehoused in these shelters until they either get sick or go kennel crazy and then they can euthanize them for behavior or health reasons and those numbers don’t count against their no kill statistics. As long as an animal doesn’t come into the shelter, it doesn’t count as an
intake and then therefore it doesn’t affect their live release statistics. If an animal starves to death or gets hit by a car killed by other animals on the street, it never counted against their intake numbers, and won’t count against their euthanasia numbers.

It’s all about the numbers. No kill is really not sustainable until we can get people to be more responsible, and we all know that’s not going to happen. Most of them aren’t responsible with themselves or their human children so I’m not sure why they’re expected to be with their animals

Yes. It has nothing to do with more work. It has to do with not having enough funds to take care of all the animals in the shelter. And no kill just exacerbates this problem. I don’t have perfect recall but I remember one post from a shelter that they had 50?60?70? intakes in one weekend alone. And probably had 7 or 8 adoptions. They take in pregnant female dogs that have a litter of 8 to 10 puppies. Sure they can transport some of the puppies up north but so many of these intakes are pitbull crosses that the northern shelters do not want. You do the math - it doesn’t take very long before the cages are full with nobody going anywhere. I even have seen a post asking for dog food for one of these shelters - they did not even have enough dog food to get through the weekend. And then they get in a puppy with parvo and that really upends the finances.

The problem is not the shelters but lack of funds and the epidemic of unspayed/ neutered animals exponentially reproducing. And if they euthanize they are vilified and if they are no kill they run out of funds and space and have no room for further intakes. The rescues are doing their best to help but there again they only have so much money and space.

Well little Fluffy Bottoms just passed two milestones, 1. - She can climb up the stairs. OK. She won’t be a pest because she can’t get on the bed. 2. - She can climb on the bed. So about 3AM I have a crack head kitten jumping on my feet and biting them.

The other little one is still a screamer. Hates to be left alone and is not happy to be locked in a stall at night. He is not the sharpest crayon in the box and this is for his protection. He is getting pretty tame.

Oh lord I remember those days. Baler would climb up the bed using the bed coverings and then run around wanting to play with the other cats (who all wanted to sleep). It was awhile (read: a couple of months) before I could get him to settle down and sleep the little idiot. And shutting him in the bathroom was a no because he would shriek and crash around knocking stuff over because he wanted to be with the “big kitties,” 'cos he was a big boy, too. :smile_cat:

Hang in there and enjoy this stage of silly baby while it lasts. You will miss it when she grows up. I know I miss the days when my kittens grew out of the baby nonsense. Little tails like Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree, every day an adventure and racing thru the house a hundred mph and leaping and pouncing at nothing. When a leaf was great fun.

And no I can’t have a kitten now.

Yes she sleeps all day. And as soon as I go to bed - Partee!!! Time to rock n’roll! I have a cat toy with balls in a tunnel and I hear her up there with it now. Better to endure that noise than have my feet bitten. One thing - I don’t get to sleep in these days. Which is good because I need to get up and outside before the bad heat hits. As soon as the sun is up she is sitting on my head and trying to bite me. I think when they have been malnourished and suddenly they get fed - lots of energy to expend.

Yes!!! And she does not need to be teething on my toes.

Kittens went to the TSC clinic for shots yesterday. I got black kitten in his carrier, set the carrier in the shade and went back indoors to put Muffins in her carrier and put on some dry, cleaner clothes. I come back outside ready to leave and the door to the carrier is open and the black kitten is nowhere to be found. Shi-ite! No kitten in barn but when I go back up to the house I spot him and chase him down to get him in the carrier. Muffins weighs 3 pounds and he weighs 2.3 pounds. I think the difference is that Muffins was dumped 2 weeks before him so she has been eating good 2 more weeks than he has.

So last night late I notice her back foot is swollen and twice the size of her other back foot. They draw blood for a FIV and leukemia test which is a good thing. But then they wrap the leg at the point of the needle injection with a gauze pad and vet wrap. It was this leg that had a big foot. So it appears that the wrap is way too tight and cutting off circulation in that lower leg and foot. And she is limping on that leg. So now I need to get that wrap off pronto. But it won’t come off. I cannot find any end to the vetwrap. If I try to use scissors she screams. That leg hurts and she does not want me to mess with it. Finally, I find a razor blade to cut one side of the wrap so I can get it off. Scissors do not work and she screams if I try with them. She is screaming, hissing, biting while I try to hold her and get a part of the bandage cut. So instead of cutting the bandage I slice my finger. Lots of curse words on my part but I can’t leave it on if it is too tight. Finally I got it slid down her leg a little and sliced it off with the razor blade. I remember tales of humans that lost their legs from a cast that was too tight.

Her foot is back to normal this AM and she does not hate me anymore. The other kittens bandage is not that tight but it is coming off too. I hope removal is easier!

omg I’m glad you caught the black kitty. Do you think someone let him out?

No. Nobody here. I most likely did not get the door fastened good and he was trying desperately to get out. I almost set the carrier in the car but I thought it would be cooler in the shade where I put it.

I’m
So glad you found him

Well I let Little Inky Dinky come inside for a playdate with Muffins. (I don’t think the name Spitfire really suits him because he really isn’t. He is very sweet and a little bit dumb. Since his coat is jet black after the unhealthy kitten fuzz got replaced, I think Inky is a better name.) I am pretty certain he is her brother in spite of her acting like she doesn’t know or like him. Both have hit the terrible toddler stage where they need somebody to wrassle with. And the older cats are sick of them. So they are in here play fighting and having a good time. Nothing like having two small wrecking balls running through the house. They are pretty evenly matched so I hope they wear each other out so I can sleep tonight.

They missed their second kitten shots last weekend. I got both wrangled and into carriers and down to TSC and the PetVet people did not show up. They need to get their shots so they can go get de-sexed. He needs to have them removed so he does not start spraying and I don’t need her to come in heat and attract all the semi-feral tomcats in the area. She is living in the house but I still don’t want to take a chance or deal with the chaos.

The vet that I take my cats to does this also. Fortunately, the first time they drew my attention to the bright red bandage. Since I did not want to have to battle with my cat to get this off I had them remove it before I left, and again since then. I figure it’s similar to the bandage they stick on your arm when they draw blood, and it never bleeds for very long. Moral of the story is to check and have vet wrap removed before leaving.

My daughter noticed a mother and three kittens hanging around her boyfriend’s house. Of course she had to trap them. Of course they came to live with me. Of course she had to leave for a week on a work project. Thankfully, we found a rescue that would take them. They weren’t feral, just not very tame. The two boys kittens were pretty bold, but the mama and the female kitten were quite spooked. They spent two weeks here eating everything in sight and learning the humans could be counted on for food.

The mama was jet black. Very pretty girl. Unfortunately our house cat is very territorial so there was no chance of keeping her.

I can’t believe how fast they are getting big. The play date wore out Ms. Muffin. Hopefully she won’t be biting my feet at 3AM and she got the late night crazies out of her system.

Little Inky wants to live in a house. He says he don’t wanna be a barn cat. He wants to sit by your feet and get petted all day long. When he isn’t playing hard.

I need these two more cats like a hole in my head.
