Is anyone going to be at the Fair Hill Races?

I’m not sure who else gets emails from Steeplechase Times but yesterday’s remark on the Fair Hills was an interesting one:
Memorial Day Weekend in our hometown means one thing - the Fair Hill Races. They date back to 1934 and are the ONLY American steeplechase meet with pari-mutuel wagering. It’s our chance to act like we know what we’re talking about and try to get rewarded for it as gamblers who are supposed to know. And you know how that works out. This year’s races are Saturday and start at 1 p.m. Gates open at 10 a.m. Get there early, bring the sunscreen.

Look for in the Fifth Race two of the standout horses from the estate of the late Nick Arundel: Union Army and Mr. Hot Stuff.
I do get ST emails. I hate the heat. One year our 4 H group did the food and it was cold and raining. No one thought to bring hot drinks but me. We sold every hot drink we could make, and not fast enough. I brought coffee, an urn to make it and hot chocolate and we sold out.
This year ICE will be in! If anyone sells water ice and cold drinks with ice they will be in demand.

Sounds like a good opportunity to make money and keep the public happy

Props for the organizers/owners/trainers in assembling relatively big fields for each race! Race 3, for example, has 14 starters. The smallest field is 9 horses in race 5.
One curious horse - Maya Charli (#11) in race 4: breeder was the John A. Nerud Revocable Trust. Nothing like a Dr. Fager connection of sort

Petty noted that he will only accept minimal mounts in steeplechase races this spring and summer, but one horse he will certainly stay aboard is Sunshine Numbers. A 9-year-old Polish Numbers gelding out of a Dahar mare, Sunshine Numbers romped to a 27-length victory in the Grade III, $50,000 Carolina Cup at Camden Race Course on April 2 and is currently being pointed for the Grade I New York Turf Writers Handicap at Saratoga later this summer. That victory is Petty’s only tally of the year from eight mounts.
“I’m basically just staying with those horses that have won for me, and Sunshine Numbers is a very nice horse,” Petty said. “He just seemed like the type of horse that had to be put on the front end, and he cleared the first jumps so easily and he just opened up on them. He was still traveling really well at the end of the race. I think I was 20 lengths up midway through the (2.25-mile) race, and at the end, he was so far in front that I looked back and didn’t see anyone behind me.”

We have 2 siblings in the flat races
Pebble to a Pearl, race 1, and Brother Sy, race 3. Hope it’s not too hot and the storms are minimal. Fairhill is always a fun day for us! Hope to see some of you there. My dilemma is the two race in different silks, so I have to pack two hats!:lol:

Just curious but since this can be wagered on I assume the signal (video) is transmitted to at least Maryland OTB facilities. Anyone know if this will be aired on HRTV since they have all the Maryland tracks locked up?
The NSA website doesn’t suggest any on-line video will be available.

I see that it’s a beautiful and sunny day but the temps area already in the high 70’s and humid. There seems to be a significant breeze and the blue skies had white clouds moving north. This is a visual observation and what the internet says the temp is. However it also says that there is a decent chance of thunderstorms, probably spotty and so I hope they miss Fair Hill till the races are over.

Man, Mr. Hot Stuff looked good out there. Spoke with his jock after the race, who said “its about time he won, and he ought to have clobbered this field”, but he WAS smiling ear to ear:)

They called him Paris Hilton – always showing up at the big parties, socializing with the stars, hitting the hot spots – but never quite delivering on looks and talent. That was on the flat. They don’t call him that in steeplechasing.
Continuing his ascent in the sport, Gill Johnston’s Mr. Hot Stuff cheekily won the optional claiming feature at Penn National Friday night. The former Kentucky Derby starter scored by three quarters of a length over Roman Glory (Robbie Walsh) and Easy Red (Paddy Young).
Rated in fourth for most of the trip, Mr. Hot Stuff deployed his kick to collar Roman Glory after the last and sneak away to a comfortable score. A full-brother to Travers winner Colonel John, Mr. Hot Stuff jumped steadily and won easily, scoring for the second consecutive time.
Bred by WinStar Farm, Mr. Hot Stuff dabbled at the top of the sport, running in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes two years ago. A winner of just one race on the flat, he never fulfilled his promise in his first career and was purchased by Fisher for owner Nick Arundel last summer. One of the grandest-looking horses on the circuit, Mr. Hot Stuff was purchased by Johnston at Arundel’s estate sale this spring.
Expect to see him next at the Spa in the novice division!

No problem, but “he” (as Creaghgal noted) appears to be “Mr. Hot Rod” as well as “Stuff”
I really wish the NSA would get these races on their website for live and replay. Its time for the ruling/organizing body to step it up. If I can hunt down a publicly available, and free, replay why is it the NSA cannot share that too?
Pie in the Sky stuff, but I’d love to see steeplechase races filmed in 3-D and aired on ESPN’s 3D channel when there is precious little content. It would be a chance for racing to really build an audience at the early stages of a new technology.
Oh well. Another missed opportunity.
