Hi everyone,
What is common these days in the breeding industry for broodmare sale prices? I have a high-quality warmblood mare that has had a successful upper-level sport horse career and one beautiful foal and I’m interested in seeing what would be a marketable price for her to continue as a broodmare. What would a fair range that reputable breeders would be looking? Thanks for any advice!
Depends on her pedigree, any WB approvals, and her show record. Unless she’s truly phenomenal, in the southeast many brood mares are placed on free leases.
My broodmare - who produced the foal of my dreams - was out of Rio Grande. Free lease with insurance and all expenses paid by me.
Also age is a HUGE determining factor since it contributes to how much ROI (number of foals) the buyer will get…
But yeah, lots of successful show mares on free leases, pedigree and approvals help… But they are still not bringing much.

It all depends on what is her age, her sport results and her pedigree and her general dispositions.
Like many have said, every fall, it is the round of people with injured sport mares calling breeders to try to find someone to pay for the expenses in return of a foal.
Honestly, I have found that what may increase the value of a mare sold as a broodmare is the dameline. These exceptionnal damelines (and I mean exceptionnal, with international recognition) are rarely for sale and breeders who have them know what they worth and tend to hold on to them. Sometimes, if you are lucky, you may find them at a show barn where they are not exactly aware of the quality of the dame line.
