So I just bought a new horse and don’t own a double bridle that fits him. I’ve been looking at the Tota Comfort Bridles and the PS of Sweden online - but the one that has really caught my eye is the Fairfax. Has anyone used/seen one in person? Anyone know of a US dealer that has stock? I’ve been using their girth for years and adore it!
Hi Joiedevie99, they just released the bridle in the USA a couple of weeks ago. Up until then they have been only available in the UK. Theoretically you are not suppose to buy stock bridle from them. They really want it to be fitted to the horse, otherwise it will not work as well. I am more than happy to talk to you about the process. Please call or email me. thesaddlefits@gmail.com or 612 799 3811
I bought a snaffle from TDS Saddlery in the UK last year after sending detailed measurements. The bridle they put together for me fits great, and I like it in theory. My horse has been at the trainer and the bridle has been hanging up in my house since I bought it, so I can’t really vouch for how it works, or how it wears. I just liked the design of the drop noseband and decided to buy the full bridle instead of parting something together.
I have a client with the Fairfax and I am not in love. The crown is nice enough, but not noticeably better than either the PS of Sweden that I have or the Tota bridle (which I also own). The Fairfax also has a bulky, squarish caveson that I think lies awkwardly on the horse’s nose (I also personally think it’s pretty unattractive). I realize the claim is that the special material is more comfortable but it looks like it actually puts more pressure than a regular padded one would. You also cannot change the browband on this bridle which isn’t a deal breaker for some but may be for others.
Regarding leather, the quality is nice, and perhaps slightly better than the PS of Sweden which is something to consider (I do like the elastic inserts on the Sweden that allows for some give with the bit though).
I personally prefer the Tota bridle to them both. I think the quality is good, the ergonomics seem comfortable for the horse, the padding is nice, and it’s an attractive bridle. Both of my horses seem to like the noseband as well.
i have the headpiece on a snaffle bridle…the leather quality SUCKS…got rained on once and is grey, fluffy edges, rough top side etc but my 5yo loves it so i am stuck (and i have used a PS headpiece too and he definitely prefers the Fairfax).
he is a curler, likes to self rollkur and roll up behind the contact and the Fairfax made a big diff in the feeling of him wanting to take the hand forward and relax on the end on my reins. i just wish it was nicer leather.
i would never spring for the whole bridle but when he moves up the levels ill get the double headpiece and use my own cheeks/noseband etc.
