I know of the SafTFence, but has anyone used anything else as a long term brush imitator? I was thinking aquarium plants. Converting a plank in my jump field into a pseudo brush fence. Thanks!
If you live in duck hunting territory, you might be able to pick up duck blind brush (it comes in a roll and can be trimmed to height) from your local Academy Sports. That’s what I did and it worked fairly well if you don’t mind that it is brown and not green. Simply build an appropriate frame and start stuffing.
I went to a clinic at Buck Davidson’s farm a few weeks ago and they had a 4x4 with a bunch of holes drilled in it - each hole had a broom upside down. I thought it was brilliant! I have to stop at the dollar store here in town to see if I can’t pick up a dozen cheapie brooms to massacre.
Here’s a picture!!

I use the fake garland from Christmas Tree Shops. The upside downs work great too!
Old artificial Christmas tree branches (if they are not rigid). I have a secret desire to use branches from those “mod” aluminum trees from the 60s.
Personally, I stay away from the old broom method since all of ours have metal binding and I worry about that from a safety perspective. That said, it does work effectively and cheaply.
I don’t think its (the brooms are) very attractive at all. I would peruse Michael’s craft stores, Home goods has tons of fake greenery, and Christmas Tree shops. Also check out Ocean State Job lots and the like. Similar to Christmas Tree. No harm looking in your local dollar store. I guess I also like the idea of cutting up an old fake xmas tree, too, but I like better the kinds of greenery on ropes type you can get at Home Goods and the like. Wreaths uncoiled.
Craft stores all the way!
Well…a little birdie told me that one should check the dumpsters near the after-any big steeplechase cleanup…for broken plastic branches…which work fine for what we do!
monkey grass from the dollar store or craft store. Just look in the fake flower section.
I have Leland cypresses that grow by my ring, so I am always having to trim the branches back. So I just use those. They stay green a long time.
