Fake Tail Question

I have a question about fake tails. Where do they “come from”? I understand that they are sold by a number of vendors, and amazingly are even sold on Amazon and Ebay, but where does the hair originate from? I have this sad :no:image of tailless ponies in third world countries…

Oh, and what is the purpose of a “weighted” fake tail?

Some come from slaughtered horses, some come from live horses in China, some come from live or dead from natural causes horses in the US. The weights affect how the horse carries its tail, which is important for some breeds/ disciplines.

I make fake tails. My hair comes from a supplier in the US. They get the hair from deceased horses, they assured me they do not accept hair that was cut from living horses who need it for fly control, and as an attempt to stop the practice of people coming in the night to chop the tails off show horses, etc.

I have no issue with getting hair from slaughter houses or other deceased horses. They don’t need them anymore and I believe nothing should be wasted.

There are different weights in the sense that you can buy a 1/2lb, 1lb tail, etc (the size), or weighted to hold the tail down.

Thank you for the information, GoodTimes and HighFlyer!

I saw a couple for sale in a used tack store that were clearly off a dead horse; the tail included the strip of leather/horsehide off the dock (like a real fur collar on a coat would).

I love a weighted tail as alternative to a horse that wrings their tail (no pain, not unhappy, not in regard to spur use, just uses it a lot) without injecting or cutting which I really don’t believe in and makes me very unhappy. :frowning:

These, while gross, are good for horses with little to no real hairs to tie the fake to.
