Has anyone tried the fall detection with the new Apple Watch? If it works, it could be very useful for those of us who ride alone.
I have neighbors in their 80’s who both have the watch. I know it works for falls in the house. Falls from a horse? I don’t know
Which model of watch? I may be looking into a pair of these if this is the case.
Is it an app that can be downloaded to an older model Apple Watch?
I can’t say for sure whether it works, but a good friend fell off and had a bad injury. Her watch was broken in the fall. So, don’t count on the watch surviving a fall from a horse and THEN being able to do a fall alert.
Eponacelt, was that an Apple Watch that was broken in the fall? I hope the new Apple watches are sturdy. Otherwise, their fall alert may not be very useful. I think the fall alert is only on the newest Apple watches, so the number of times they have been used for falling from a horse may be small.
Yes. It was a new (Series 3) Apple watch. I don’t know if she was thrown into the wall, or just hit the ground hard, but the watch shattered, from my understanding. She was pretty broken too, with several broken vertebrae.
Epona, thanks for the details. Maybe it makes sense to spend the extra money for the stainless steel model, if I am going to buy a Watch. i just talked with Apple Support and they said they think the Apple Watch 4 will work well for falls from a horse.
I wonder if it will register jumps as falls since it’s probably GPS/accelerometer (S?) driven… (not that I jump, but…) And I would be really annoyed if it asked “are you OK?” every time I dismounted…
THat said, when I hear positive reports, I might consider it since I ride alone 99% of the time.
Apple technical support said the watch should not register jumps as falls. I just asked about jumping logs on the trail; not Grand Prix show jumps or advanced level XC jumps.
Bumping to ask if anyone got a new Series 4 for Christmas and has ridden with it yet? I never considered an Apple Watch before seeing the new fall detection feature on the 4. I ride alone a lot and although I send a text when I get on/off I think something like this would be great.
My barn owner rides with one. I went out with her and the horse stumbled, not badly, but the watch asked if she had fallen and needed help. She said it asked again when the horse stumbled if she was okay. She uses this watch for the intended purpose of fall indication whether on the horse or normal activities.
