Folks may recall the famed photo from the 1980 running at Belmont Park in the Tremont Stakes of Great Prospector savaging the winner, Golden Derby. The picture was by track photographer Bob Coglianese and was awarded the 1980 Eclipse Award in photography.
Overshadowed by the goings on up at Pimlico was the 2012 edition of the same - and yes the winner was taken down: Image here by Reed Palmer with Chilled (inside; trained by Paul McGee, with Corey Lanerie, up) trying to bite Zimmer (outside; ridden by Calvin Borel) in deep stretch of Race 9 at Churchill Downs.
Paul McGee thought he secured his 300th career training win at Churchill Downs when Chilled won a close photo finish in Friday’s $57,528 allowance feature, but the 49-year-old Louisville native was denied the milestone when Kentucky Horse Racing Commission stewards disqualified his colt to second for trying to savage Zimmer near the finish line.
A steward’s inquiry followed the race and it was determined that Chilled “intimidated” Zimmer which cost him the victory, according to KHRC chief steward Barbara Borden. Therefore, Chilled was disqualified and placed second and Zimmer was promoted to first.
