Fan motors getting hot?

We have enclosed motor fans for the stalls and it was noticed today that the motors are actually getting hot to the touch. Is that typical? They don’t sound loud, they seem to be working well, and it isn’t individual - it was 4 that were running. They have been off for a week because we had a tease of fall weather. Everything is unplugged now.

Normal. Any motor with a thin metal shield on it is going to feel pretty dang warm when running.

Mine get hot too. It always bothers me but hubs says it’s normal.

Which is why cleaning barns routinely is important. Cobwebs and dust are highly flammable.

Yep - and making sure those fans get cleaned and brushed off. They accumulate a ridiculous amount of dust.

Can a fan with a sealed motor be cleaned by lightly spraying with water? Mine are bolted high over my stalls and so far I have not done that but they are covered with dust and need cleaning. And they do get pretty warm to the touch, to respond to the original post.

mine was overheating from the dust build up on the sealed motor and shutting off - was good to see the safety shut off worked! I used a air compressor to blow the gunk off it.

what is the rating of the motor? Check the installation manual to see it states the rating or google the fan’s model number to see if you can find the rating

needs to be at least a NEMA 3R which provides a degree of protection with respect to harmful effects on the equipment due to the ingress of water

normally if direct water spray is normally expect a NEMA 4 is rated for direct stream of water protection

I’d get a long piece of tubing and use a compression fitting to attach it to a pneumatic jobby. Blow it off.

Wear safety glasses and a mask when you do it.
