FAQ
No, women should not wear Scarlet. Even if they are a Master because they should not be Masters either.
No, your 3 year old Arab is not a good hunt horse prospect. He is too goofy. He might be a good hound food prospect.
Yes, you need to have a flask or you will be excused from the field, especially if you don’t share.
No, you should not carry a whip if you don’t know how to use it. Your after hours whipping activities do not count.
Yes, the hounds kill the little furry cute fox. Deal with it.
No, they will not slow down for you, ride hard or stay home.

hey Joel, where ya been?
use caution when buying from Ebay
A few years ago I found I could purchase a lot of the items I needed on ebay. However I was finding it hard to find a decent hunt whip at a decent price. I finally found a whip I really liked but wasn’t sure about the length of the handle. It was a used whip, looked to be in very good condition.
I emailed the gent selling it and told him I was an American gal who fox hunted and was starting to assist as a whipper-in. I asked him if this (used) whip was appropriate for fox hunting. He responded “it’s a good used whip” . I don’t see why you couldn’t use it for fox hunting". I then realized I was responding to an S&M seller.

Foxhunt4Me - we are not worthy! WG bows low to the master of foxhunting humor!!! Priceless!
OK I’m in…
The REAL use of a huntwhip is to bonk your horse in the haid when he’s being a jerk. Works well on husbands & fellow hunt members when needed.
The real reason for jumping single file is so that everyone can watch you and critique you. Be sure to count strides. The crest release is very important.
Hilltoppers are advised to not laugh when watching first flight jump a nearby coop. Please keep a straight face. Placing bets is also verbotten.
Passing flasks amongst the peoples at a check requires practice with your horse. Don’t come until you’ve schooled your horse in this skill.
Hi - LOL
Hey Dawglover ( ? ) just thought I would pop in and inject a word of humor. Do not get over here much at all anymore sometime browse the various discussion groups here - there is always a good buzz going on on the COTH boards.
Actually a FAQ is always a great idea for any topic list / board - thats why when I was running the hunt club websites, I would always have those on the site ( etiquette , attire and general FAQ ) for just those reasons.
I didn’t join a hunt last season and the way it looks now most likely never will again - there are many reasons, some are related to the local hunt organization and some some to my own health and inability to ride like I would like to be able to anymore. I am not slamming anyone or any organization, lets just say that sometimes, like in a failed marriage, both parties decide that they would be happier if they were not married any longer in order to remain at least friends - or at least civil to each other. They don’t miss me as far as I can tell , and I know that some are happy that I am gone, and the leadership is happy that I am no longer posting on FOL - that was always a big point of contention.
So we is all happier now.
Why doncha you move east?
Lots more huntin’ and if you lasted say a season at any one hunt…why, you could hunt for DECADES jist here in old Virginny!

How many sessions do you think I should schedule with my trainer?
Always enjoy your humor, Joel.
You should pop in more often.
You must add some dress code links!
Thanks
Dawglover > check out my post in the " Off Course " section.
Tantivy > Can’t afford Virginny ! And they talk funny out there - I do have relatives in Virginny though… but they make great ham…
Asanders > You need to schedule as many lessons as it takes to perfect the art. Don’t go on the cheap by not taking lessons for the important points of foxhunting.
On a more serious note , giving the cities that the hunts are located in would help. The MFHA only lists the states the hunts are in and not all the hunts have websites linked to them to find location and contact info. If someone was really inclined to do so, they could create a map with pinpoints of hunts that contain contact info when clicked on.
A section on attire for all hunt-related events (cubbing, hunting, hound walking, trail riding, hunter pace, etc) would take around 1/2 the normal questions off the board. A list of places to aquire clothing (new and used) would be ideal. If anyone knows of a virtual “dress the hunter” game that lets you move to the next level when you get everything right, we can refer peoplt to it .
I’d like a listing of really good places to get hunting tack. There are alot of lesser known places that have great stuff and some that have very affordable stuff for poor college students like me.
There needs to be a list of attributes of a hunt horse. Then all the “would my horse be good at hunting” questions would be no longer.
Geez if we had all that…
Then what would we talk about?
Since facinated has been banned we don’t even have a troll to poke.
We definitely do need links to the MFHA, hunt terms, and recommended attire and protocol.
Our hunt has all of that info on one page, we could link to it. My husband maintains the site so I someone wanted to add something I could probably beg and plead him to add it.

Note the proper order and rank in the huntfield. Web master goes behind field master. Of course he doesn’t even have his colors or hunt. He does ride though and has hunted ages ago. Just his idea of a funny.
We could have links to hunting suppliers like Middleburg tack exchange, Hourse Country and The old habit, there are others too.
I loved Joel’s response though. I did miss him. He was spot on.
too true
we always knew the order of riders was don’s humor but there are gullible noobs in every avocation.
and since most in the hunt bring their own horses a list of threads and links about unsuitable trailer/tow vehicle combos.

My former hunt had a plate that they awarded yearly for some sort of foolish blunder or faux paus . It was a small hunt and well … I did win it more than once. He actually defaulted it to me one year because the person to whom he really wanted to give it , according to him had “no sense of humor”.
The presenter (the Master for whom the plate was made) was always good natured about it. He too had won it a few times. Our co-master was usually silent during these presentations as she never really saw things the way we did and I’m sure she felt it was awarding improper behavior. Most of us felt it was a way to keep the troops in order-thus you never wanted to win the “dreaded plate”.
Of course, I didn’t mind as it was a small hunt and someone had to "earn " it. Not that my receiving this award was unjustified-lessons learned.
Joel love this thread. There are many serious threads about hunts /hunting and protocols. I do read them, as I sometimes cap in with other hunts in my area and enjoy my time following hounds. Like my former MFH you are able to do this with well and with a good laugh. Points well taken -I look forward to more posts.

Glad to have some fun. Yeah there are a lot of people that take foxhunting too seriously and foxhunters that take themselves too seriously - honestly thats what takes the fun out of the sport. Too many Type A personalities and A- holes in hunt clubs.
One hunt I was in had a " ground tester of the year ’ travelling trophy - I did win that one year.
Recently , I have been diagnosed with arthritis in my knees and in my feet and have had a lot of problems with it lately - Some days I am lucky to be able to walk and ride at all and navigate my stairs and do what I want to do in taking care of the horses etc. much less ride hard in a hunt. Maybe its just a flareup this year and I will get over it and be back in form someday soon, I didn’t think I was old enough for this yet, cr*p !

oops.
Joel,
What do you mean there should be no lady MFH??? (insert whithering look as done by a southern lady here) My very dearest friend is a former MFH and can out ride, out whip and out think a good 90% of the men out there with the same title. She simply has less disposable income than the other 10%. Which of course is the first and most important criteria if you follow your tongue in cheek logic. Of course I carried a flask and of course I shared. Hell, I should carry a flask at the horse shows and share with my trainer. (this is almost as fun as FOL)
New FAQS!
Foxhunt! Take your pills, shut up & Ride!!! One word…Celebrex…nope 2 words…Celebrex & Percocet!! But no drinkie when taking narcotics! You CAN drink on Celebrex!!! Yeppers!!
So new FAQs for our imaginary info board:
-
No drinkie when taking narcotics!

First flighters sometimes think that “dropping back” IS in fact dropping back to a lower level of existence & fun. NOT! Hilltopping is the highest form of foxhunting and all practitioners of this high art should be worshipped and adored! They really know what the heck is going on! Hilltoppers Rule.
-
There is no shame in saying “I’m done”. Hopefully you are correctly guaging you & your horses’ level of fitness. Be sure to leave enough in the tank to actually make it back to the trailers. Forget about what others might think of you if you go in early. BUT there ARE rules about going in…learn them!
-
Be quiet when going in. Slink about the countryside so no one is disturbed (be that fox, landowner, hounds, huntsman, female master…etc)
Disturbed is a bad state of mind for ALL masters…you may incur THE LOOK!!! The LOOK can kill you or at least knock you off your horse! Women masters are better at THE LOOK as they are usually wives and have had practice!
-
No jumping when going in. There’s no hilltoppers there to grade you so why bother! Without the snickering…where’s the fun!? AND if you fall off; there’s no one to summon the helicopter! And your horse will run back to the trailers and you’d have to WALK back!
