Far Hills headlines as drunken bro fest

Chasing meets need to get a handle on this. It is an ever increasing problem. In the Spring, Charlottesville headlines read that at Fox Field drunkeness was slightly down with little said about the racing. I suggest the NSA give over management of its meets to the JC. The JC can manage boredom into just about anything it gets it hands on and with some luck chasing fans will be able to see the racing without the debauchery.

Sounds like the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness. Not sure if that’s a good thing or not.

Or the infield/RV parking lot at a NASCAR event. Or football tailgate parties…

I can usually stay away from the over-imbibers but truly dislike thinking I am getting on the same roads they are :frowning: at least at NASCAR, after the race, many just hang out and continuing consuming before heading home.

That’s about how it goes at the Iroquois Steeplechase. The tailgate spots in the infield are a massive, drunken party, where twenty-somethings (and those want to feel like a twenty-something) dress up in their best and get wasted.

I’ve had people say to me that they didn’t know there were horses competing at “Steeplechase.”:confused::rolleyes:

While I am continually irked that racing is an afterthought to the party at these events, I also say give the people what they want. If you can pull 25,000 people willing to pay $1000 for a tailgating space to fund the sport, then have at it.

The only downside is that these types of events aren’t really doing anything to increase interest in the sport. All it will take is for one, serious infield accident to make the news cycle and the whole party is over… literally. It’s a band-aid to keep the sport going, much like slots have been for flat racing.
