A good retrospective article about his life and times. I remember that several COTH members used him for their mares.
I remember him back when he was competing, he was an amazing animal.
Me too! I was a young teen when I asked and was able to pet him at Devon. I was certainly starstruck and he was lovely to be around!
I never got the chance to see him in person. But fell in love with him through the pictures I’ve seen. I’m a sucker for chrome. I remember people dissing him as a sire, but some of the mares he was bred to in Ontario were not necessarily the cream of the crop.
oh I was always envious of anyone who had a popeye k baby. The ones I saw had a lot of chrome, a good attitude, and a super jump.
He really was an icon. I don’t think I ever saw him jump a bad round, at least not what videos made it to the internet.
I’m so sorry to hear he’s crossed over rainbow bridge but by the sound of the COTH article, he was beloved to the end and wanted for nothing. A life every horse should have.
This is my favorite line from Serio "I just got his trust, and that was it. He liked the ride.” Has anyone here ridden or cliniced with Tommy Serio? He sounds like a good horseman and of course a great rider. (In the article the owner referred to Popeye as “it” a lot, I found that very distasteful)
Me too!
I loved Popeye K and always wished to have one of his foals. I just loved how flashy he was and his offspring that I knew, two geldings, were adorable and sweet. Sorry to hear of his passing.
He looked like so much fun to ride.
I’m not that big on chrome, I like a solid color better than a flashy horse but his jump was so nice and his expression so great, he was always fun to watch.
Like it or not many who deal with many horses over many years will use “it” rather than he or she. More of a habit than disrespect. Don’t read to much into it.
I’ve been around animals all my life and I’ve never used the term “it”. It is, in my book, a sign of disrespect to another life. But it’s ok for you to approve of the usage.
I don’t approve or disapprove just pointed out that it’s not that unusual to hear it and doubt there is any meaning in their choice of pronoun. I choose he or she (if known)…no meaning there either.
