Farm Bureau Insurance and Breed restrictions

Does anyone know if Farm Bureau Insurance in Va has breed restrictions? I have Renter’s Insurance through State Farm so I am fine but my landlord has Farm Bureau and isn’t sure about his. We are hoping to adopt a rescue pittie. He is calling them Monday but I can’t find a straight answer online. Thanks!

From what I could find, for Virginia only Farm Bureau and State Farm don’t have restrictions. Farm Bureau supposedly doesn’t limit breeds (unless there’s a history of problems with a particular dog) and State Farm doesn’t ask about breed. I know USAA doesn’t have breed restrictions either. This might depend on the individual agent though, and there’s no guarantee they won’t change their policies in the future.

I don’t know about VA, but I have GSDs, a doberman, giant schnauzer, etc and my TN Farm Bureau agent knows about them and doesn’t have a problem with them.

I don’t know about VA, but I have Farm Bureau insurance, and when the agent was writing the policy and asked about critters (I have an extra liability rider specifically in case of horses getting out or kicking a trespasser, etc.), his only question on the dog was, “Does it bite?” Never asked breed, apparently just wanted a statement on that dog’s temperament, and he took my word for it.

I have had Farm Bureau for thirteen years (but not in VA.), and they have never put restrictions on what breeds we can have. I have owned a Rottweiler and two German Shepherd Dogs over the years and have never had a problem.

Are you sure it is purebred and not a mix? Does it have papers to prove it? A lot of dogs are called “pits” but are mixes, sometimes without pit in the mix.
Best of luck with your new doggie!

I’ve had Farm Bureau (in VA) since I moved to this farm about 10 years ago. At that time, the agent asked if I had a security system and I said I had 2 Dobermans. He was good with that and I think to this day my policy indicates I have a security system. (Which I don’t, other than the dogs.)

Couple of years ago, I’d heard Farm Bureau had instituted dog breed restrictions. I was in the office to pay my (exorbitant) bill and asked. He showed me a list of “banned” breeds which included the usual pits, Dobes, GSDs, Chows, maybe some others. Totally didn’t list some breeds I would think much worse (and I’ll net mention for fear of being flamed for my opinions about those breeds). I asked him what would happen if someone had one of the banned breeds and he said policy would be cancelled. I think he probably remembered I had the Dobes and we didn’t discuss further.

OP, if you are asked, just say you have a Heinz 57.

Yes, they do. I would carefully speak with your local agent.

It doesn’t matter now. Some stuff has come up unrelated to the dog so moving on. Thank you all for the responses!

I have the same kind of “security system” - GSD model. Discount has been on my policy ever since I signed up with Farm Bureau in 1985 even though the Killer Blue Dog passed away in 1995.
