Farm Name Help

Its been approaching a year since I’ve been trying to figure out a good farm name for myself. While I do not own a farm- I work out of a farm with all of my horses & clients’ horses together. For the most part, I’ve been working off of my last name; but I do not want that in my farm name (hey, a girl wants to get married sometime ).

Now the time has come for an IEA team, monogramming galore, banner & stall drapes for horse shows, directors chairs. And my indecisive self is stuck.

Things I “require”

  • Three Word Names (I like the abbreviations)
  • Short and Sweet (nothing too long)
  • Farm or Farms as the last word (not Stables, Equestrian Center, etc.)

I really like “Ridge”. And my top pick right now is Stone Ridge Farms. How do we feel about that? Too generic?

(Random words I like in barn names–> Hill, Fox, Ridge, Stone, Owl. Best way to explain it is one syllable words!)

You all are fantastic!

Stone Fox
or
Stone Owl

etc Farm

Then you can use the stone creature in your logo & on your saddle pads
Stone creature moves with you to every barn & hangs out on the gate & such.

Fox Wood Farm
Fox Hill Farm
Fox Hedge Farm

You can make up some nice logos from those words using the FWF or the FHF just reverse the first F and conjoin the letters to make the logo.

Hedgy

All sound good so far!

I like Fox Hedge. Fox Hill- I love but its too close to my friend’s Fox Tail. Also sadly trying to stay away from “wood” because my friends are ___ Wood Farm & we travel together so its a bit hard to differentiate.

Is it just me or does Owl just not sound right? I love Owl’s and there are owl’s around the barn. I feel like it doesnt roll off well.

I have to say that most of these sound over-subscribed. Anything “Fox” or “Hill” or “Ridge” has been used in every possible configuration. The only word in your roster with any hope of originality is the “owl”. But how can you use that; Owl’s Nest Farm? Owl’s Roost Farm? Hoot Owl Farms? Is there something more personal to you? Like the name of the town you were raised in, or the street that you lived on, that could be used in some way to name your farm? Or part of the name of the place where you took your first riding lessons?

I’d stick with owl. Fox/Ridge/Hill have all been way overdone, as has been said.

How about Night Owl Farm? Stone Owl, Owl Ridge, Owl Tree, Owl Creek…

Owl’s Nest Farm was my choice. The others have been over done. We have two Foxhill farms in my area alone.

Owls though happen to be very overdone right now. DD has an owl handbag, there’s owl décor at the Kroger, I’m seeing quite a bit of it.

Why NOT stick with your last name - it’s branding unique to you.

Wing Tip Farm (Purely for the abbreviation!)

I’m just going to weigh in on the word owl, although I love the birds- the word itself is a real mouthfull of marbles to say- for only three letters it’s a lot of work in the mouth without much joy for the ear. Imagine answering the phone (or hearing a horse show loudspeaker announcer) with the name… does it sound like you got caught mid-yawn?
names like Cross Creek or Red Fox (not suggestions, just examples of sounds I find pleasing, strong and recognizable) have nice bold crisp sounds while Owl- is a bit houndish. (and I do love hounds too)

True it does have to run off the tongue and have a nice ring to it. I like looking at what vegetation or trees are on the farm. I saw a cottage show the other day and they had three large willows on the lawn and called it Three Willows Farm.

You all are VERY helpful and I truly appreciate all the input! I feel like I’m getting somewhere. Not just right yet, but moving forward!

This is EXACTLY what I thought. I originally had Owl Hill on my list, which instantly got nipped in the bud due to too many ‘L’ sounds. But you took the words that I wanted to say, “owl” itself is mouthful of marbles. :frowning: (Kind of upsetting because not only do ILOVE owls. My clients know this and have refurbished my home with odds and ends Owl accessories-- from candle holder to bottle openers to flower pots to a piggy bank!)

Unfortunately, my last name is very common (just as bad as the overused geographical terms). At HITS I saw my last name posted on every other tack trunk, banner, etc. The barn across the way had my name plastered up, and the barn at the other end of the aisle had trunks with my same last name everywhere.

well make it uncommon…just call the place “An Uncommon Land”

It’s kind of hard to come up with non-generic but still traditional sounding names without details… is it in a valley, on a hill, does it have any types of trees or bushes/hedges or a creek/pond that might lend themselves to a good name?

I borrowed my farm name from a Robert Frost poem about a brook - but my property happens to have a seasonal creek. It would seem kind of weird to name a place “Oak Hill Farm” or some such if there weren’t actually any oak trees.

Just call your place

The Nonesuch

& be done with it

Choose 3 letters that look fantastic in design monograms & fit words

Try this:

Pick one of the species names that appeals to you when it rolls off your tongue, then call it xxxxx Ridge Farm.

ie. Owl species Sunda - Sunda Ridge Farm.

Gives you something unique paired with the traditional sound you like.

I’ve been thinking about this thread a lot over the past few days.

I really like Stone Owl Farm. I would enjoy saying I board at a place called Stone Owl.

And the best part is you can get a real stone owl to be your facility mascot, and you can pick it up and move it with you anywhere you go. And a grey owl is very easy to use in literal and abstract ways for logos, signs, embroidery, etc.

I too really like the Stone Owl idea. And get a stone garden owl who will stand in a spot at every farm you go to. You can decorate him for holidays, and get him a hunt coat for show days.

Stone Owl Hunt Club
Stone Owl Jumpers
Stone Owl Classical Riding
Stone Owl Equine
Stone Owl Stables
Stone Owl Horse Trials
Stone Owl Feed and Grain

Nobody has Stone Owl as a name, you’d be unique

Well, since you’re really naming your business rather than tying the name to any one farm, the physical characteristics of the current farm is not relevant.

Without over-analyzing, what five words or phrases come to mind if I ask you to describe the culture of your barn, your teaching style, or your horses’ way of going? Don’t worry about editing the list at this point, just brainstorm. Once you have those five thoughts down, start riffing off that.

Here’s what I’d name my farm if I lived in an area where farms are named:
Bright Day Farm

Wise Acres Farm (Wise–> owl… get it? ok, so that’s not exactly “classy” sounding  )
