Do any of you use this product? I used it for the first time on Friday and two of my equines appear to have had a reaction to the product. I shared the info with Farnam but was curious to learn over here if anyone else has experienced an issue. I have used their Equi Spot fly protection with no issue so I was surprised at what happened with this spray which I applied pretty lightly.
Yes, I use it. I haven’t had a problem with it. Having said that, I haven’t bought a bottle of this year’s vintage yet.
I bought this bottle last week and used it for the first time on Friday. I have tried to single out something else but nothing fits. Really weird.
I have not used Farnam Bronco Gold, but whenever I buy a fly spray with any sort of coat-conditioning properties, it’s pretty much a given that at least one of my horses will react to it. I think whatever they add to condition the coat causes the insecticides to “stick” or interact with the skin differently than they usually would. I have similar problems with oil-based sprays, so around here, I avoid both types of products.
I just say this because you mention not having issues with other Farnam products.
Good catch on the product properties Texarkana. I bathed the affected horse & donkey and let them dry. Then did a test spray spot on each one, taking a before photo to compare to IF they react again.
Used it last summer and my mare broke out in hives. Haven’t encountered that reaction with any other flyspray, either.
Farnam contacted me today per my email. They apologized for the issue and had no remedy, veterinary or product replacement cost. The gentleman did say that Bronco Gold is not labeled for use on donkeys and it was my donkey that had 5 areas of raw skin where the hair was gone. Okay Farnam, won’t use your products on my donkey. My horse had welts from Bronco Gold.
Anyway, a google search showed years of people having the same issues I encountered with Bronco Gold. I think it’s good for stripping furniture, don’t use it on your horse.
Thanks for the information, SLW. I have a donk, and as I am a donk newbie, it wouldn’t have occurred to me not to use the same spray. Now, I’ll just avoid it altogether!
I always use the same spray on my donkey that I use on the horses. They are still equines.
I know!!! Paul just had to tow the company line with the adverse reaction “it isn’t labeled for use on donkeys”. Whatever. I truly did not make a big fuss about in the email or phone call- just stated the facts. I used the product as Farnam labeled it to be used and had two adverse reactions. An FYI to them. They bumped me to the ASCPA Poison control office which opened a case on it. I have no idea what that is for given the lengthy history of adverse reactions. Honestly only putting it out here so others are forewarned that this is a problematic product to use as labeled by Farnam, IME.
My daughter sent me google links with adverse reactions to Bronco Gold which went back to 2007. The recent reviews of it on Amazon are scathing.
I would not use this product on a horse, period. Smartpack sent me a sample of a new all natural fly product they are selling with my last order. I’m going to use it on a horse I have who has an autoimmune issue. If it works on her then I will order more. I thank heaven that I didn’t use BG on her last Friday. Ugh, that could have been a crash and burn event.
There are several threads on COTH from last few years on Bronco Gold and horse reactions. I wouldn’t use it on anything!
I’m sorry your mare had such an adverse reaction to Bronco Gold and I hope she heals swiftly.
I never used it again after the reactions it gave two of my equines. I agree, not sure why the product is still on the shelves given it’s historically long issue of reactions.
I used it last year and had my horse react to it - just mild hives, but enough that I didn’t use it after figuring out it was the fly spray.
Currently using it no issues, used it on and off last year never an issue either.
