I am just curious… What does it cost for most people to just have a trim with front shoes and then trim for back shoes? Does your Ferrier charge the same price for just front shoes and then a little bit more for hind shoes added in? Or are they each an equal amount? I wanted to get an idea for an average price.
My farrier charges $150 for trimming all 4 feet and front shoes only.
(However, I pay him $200 because my horse has shivers and is a huge pain to do.
And I pay $90 for the sedation too. So, $290 for two shoes… wah wah)
When he put on hind shoes he charged me $50 more, and I bought the (plastic) shoes myself ($30/pr) making my total $370. Jeez…
You’ll find that the average varies greatly by region. When I moved to NC from New England, I couldn’t believe how much less expensive it was here. My horse is pretty straightforward–four keg shoes, no clips, trailers etc., not hot-shod. Obviously prices go up for those, or for pads, aluminum shoes etc. I pay $95 for four shoes (my farrier charges $85 for just fronts). My horse has a history of foot issues, flat soles, throwing shoes, etc., so a quality job is paramount. He has improved drastically with my current farrier, so it’s not a case of doing things on the cheap–I really do pay that price for quality work. I can’t believe he lost clients a couple years ago when he raised his prices to this current level.
Trim and front shoes is $80. Trim and shod all around is $130. WNY.
I’m in northwestern CT and I just paid $195 today for 4 keg shoes w/ clips all around. Plus an extra $20 to cover my farrier’s gas because he had to come back again so I could sedate my horse, who’d never had hinds on before and was being a pill about it.
Price is the same if hot set, $40 more for aluminums.
I’m in NC now, and pay $140 for 4 shoes (clips, cold shoe). I think he charges $110 for just fronts. But he’s one of the best in the area. In TX, I paid something like $165-180 for hot shoes (also a verygood farrier). One can also find 4 shoes for about $100-120 around here from a decent farrier.
Extreme SE PA. $240.00 for 4 shoes, hot shod, side clips, pads on the front. Horse has had hinds on for so long I don’t remember what it cost without them.
Edited to add that I can get a less expensive farrier, but I can’t get a better one, and he’s worth every penny.
NW Oregon; depends on who you hire but the good ones are at least $160 for 4 shoes (usually hot shod) and goes up from there. Mine is $175 for 4, but since I have a specialty situation going on I’m looking at $260 + the cost of sedation (another $30)… but hopefully the ‘special’ aspect of it is only for about 6 mos.
South west Idaho. $90 for front shoes, hot shod, and back trim.
Sheilah
$200.00 4 feet + shoes fitted. Very few farriers understand trimming and shoeing gaited horses. A real problem
$150 for new fronts and rear trim – $145 if old shoes can be reset. $75 for barefoot trim all 4.
Southern Maine - trim and winter shoes (rim pads in front, borium all around, new shoes) = $100.
I love my farrier
Western NC $55 trim all 4. When I did Epona’s on front, I bought the shoes and she just charged her shoeing rate, $100.
$40 barefoot trim all 4
In central Florida: trim and reset 4 shoes is $130. When we need new shoes, $150, so the shoes are $20.
Different horse, suspensory issues, egg bars on hind: different farrier - $160 trim and reset; $20 for new shoes.
My horse is barefoot…$30 trim. South Georgia.
Wow! Lucky you! We just got 4 new ice shoes with clips, plus rim pads on the fronts. I think the farrier said that’s normally a $250 job, but he charged us $180. Dh only rides this horse once a week and we miss a week now and then, so we were joking about our second ride cost us $90 and the snow and ice was mostly gone so we didn’t really even need them. The next ride will bring each ride down to $60, then $45, then $36,and then it’ll be time for a reset. Don’t yet know how much that will be, but it’s worth every cent not to have to worry about slipping on the ice.
We’re in western MA.
I charge 175 for front shoes / trim behind. That’s probably the upper end of average in my area. There’s also guys here that charge double that and some charge half that.
I charge the same new or reset. Only reason I do that is because when I was apprenticing we had a client who wanted new shoes every time because there was only a $15 difference between new and reset. Also, shoers aren’t perfect, I like the option to shape a new shoe if I’m not happy with the old one or it would take too much work to reshape the old one.
As far as 2 shoes and 4 shoe prices. I used to charge, say, 200 for 4 and 120 for 2. I’d go to a barn and shoe a bunch of horses with front shoes. I’d be wore out and not make much money. Go to a barn and shoe a bunch with 4 shoes and I wasn’t as wore out and made a lot more money because I got a break from being under the horse to shape hind shoes. Now I bumped my trims and front shoes up so they’re actually money makers for me.
It’s best to talk to people in your area about prices. It varies greatly from area to area.
$290 for four shoes but the front 2 are glue ons and they last an entire cycle.
My farrier is maybe slightly higher than average for the area, but he’s also excellent. His work on my horse (with radiograph assists from my vet) is the only reason my guy is sound today. He charges $65 for a trim all around, $150 for basic front shoes. My horse went in front (leather) pads with dental impression material underneath all summer and those ran me $240. Now he’s in rim pads up front–that set was $200.
I’m in central MD, so not a particularly inexpensive horse area anyway.
