Hi all, does anyone have a recommendation for an accomplished farrier who services SE Massachusetts? Horse needs corrective shoeing, and I am leery of all the new, younger farriers that are abundant in the area, as they haven’t been around long enough for me to know enough about their skills, and my horse’s issues were largely caused by poor farrier work. I don’t want to make the same mistake again. Thank you, in advance!
If your horse needs corrective shoeing, your vet should be able to recommend a farrier with the skills to do what is necessary.
It’s always best to find a farrier and vet team who can confer on what your horse needs. I use Dawnelle Hayden, who is terrific and who also works well with my vet.
Hi, yes, I realize but he only had 1 recommendation (he is not local to my area) and same thing with our local big teaching hospital.
It’s difficult to even get a call back.
I wonder if you could call Tufts and ask if they have recommendations? How far SE are we talking, like on the cape?
I did call Tufts and they only had 1 recommendation. I left messages, but so far nothing. They were not sure if he traveled my way, unfortunately.
Ah bummer. I had a friend who used Mike Mooney and liked him a lot. Kendel Carr might be out your way, I believe he’s based out in SE Mass if I’m not mistaken? I personally used him for 2 horses and had great results. He’s very calm which was great as I had a horse who wasn’t easy to shoe unless drugged.
I personally use the farrier recommended by Tufts, he is fantastic but incredibly busy so he keeps his travel radius a bit limited. If shipping in to Tufts is an option for you, even for a short time, he is very good about getting your horse on track and then working with your existing farrier or a farrier of your choice to do a hand off and provide guidance on how he corrected the horse.
I’m in Northeastern MA. I’m not sure if she comes out your way, but I use Rebecca Watts and really like what she’s done for my horse and the horses I’ve seen her work on at the barn I’m at.
Did you find a farrier? If not try posting your question on Facebook Equinesite.
Thank you all for your replies! I did find somebody to come out, but I will keep all the suggestions anyway in case he has trouble continuing to come out for 1 horse.
