Farriers Formula
Jello is made from gelatin. Gelatin comes from cow and pig bones and hooves. If you want non animal gelatin, it needs to be vegan or parve.
I know it doesn’t sound ‘good’ for a horse to eat cow/pig products, but what harm would it do? If it works better than biotin and there are no ‘side affects’ from geletin, then why not?

Should have clarified that I didn’t buy it for the flax really. I wanted that amount of biotin, without a ton of other minerals since he is already getting a different supplement for that. He gets flax in his Legends Omega Plus fat feed. I had a hard time finding a hoof supplement that was mostly biotin without lots of other “stuff”. This one fit the bill closely enough and was one of the cheapest, and had great reviews to boot.
Ah, I understand now. I agree it’s a good supplement, not a lot of un needed “stuff”

LauraKY do you have any personal experience feeding pure biotin vs FF? …you might be surprised

The important thing about Farrier’s Formula is the optimal copper/zinc ratio. This is especially good for horses whose feet are negatively impacted by Cushings/Insulin conditions. After a lot of research I made the investment to buy the more expensive FF and had very good and noticeable results. I believe the person who developed this formula is a vet and he did a lot of research and found that most horses with problem feet had similar dietary insufficiencies. I use it now for all of my horses. Note: I found that I needed far less than suggested by the manufacturer to get great results. I just use a Tablespoon + a day per horse divided into two meals.

My farrier wants me to use the double strength so I follow his advice.

FF is one of a very few supplements over many many years I ever had do much of anything but that was back when it was about the only one with all tne recommended stuff in it, not just biotin. Since then, I have used several others from SP that closely matched the ingredients at less cost. They produced equally good results. So did plain old gelatin way back when I first got into horses.

Thing with hooves is they take time, take a year to grow a new, healthy hoof from coronet to ground. Things that do work do so over time and continued feeding it, no magic bullet, and these things need a little help from farriers and overall good health created by good management.

Jello does indeed contain gelatin which is made from skin and bones. Try googling some articles and videos. Something to keep in mind the next time you reach for some jello or a gummy.

Anyway, to address the original question, FF double strength is just that, a concentrated version containing less fillers so you use half the amount as the regular version. FF isn’t the cheapest hoof supplement out there (about $.59 a day) but we’ve used it for years with great results. We buy the 11lb vacuum sealed refill bags from Big Dees and get free shipping.

Ghost thread, I know, but I didn’t want to start a new one just to ask what the names of the cheaper Farriers Formula comps with the same ingredients?

I’ve heard that .CA trace is better and cheaper, but take that eith a grain of salt because I’ve done zero research on pricing or ingredients. I just remember seeing a few people mention it as an alternative

I was feeding one called Shoers Friend but it’s been about 10 years since then. SP offers a good list of ingredients and amount of each on all products ( except FF which is proprietary). Pretty easy to compare and you can find most elsewhere if you don’t want SP or duplicate ingredients.

Some topics are timeless and the discussion timely no matter how much time has passed. Growing a healthy hoof is one of them.
