The story is long and convoluted but my 17 year old eventer has just been put in bar shoes. He is a horrid over-reacher. We are going to back up his rears tomorrow and use bell boots but we gave up on heart bars 2 years ago because he couldn’t keep them on. Today, he was put in straight bars . I have no idea how we are going to keep these things on. Any new gadgets on the market? What do you do for the horse that needs bar shoes but really has a long stride in back?
I’ve always used 2 pairs of bell boots in the instance. One that fits and a size or two larger on top that covers the shoe all the way to the ground. It should touch the ground and drag a hair. Otherwise, I know people were using the Shoesecure to keep shoes on. I’ve never used it personally.
The most effective thing would be to attempt to fix the break-over behind with a heavier shoe and keep the toes as backed up as possible. Some horses just have such long legs and reach behind that it’s a difficult somewhat impossible problem to fix.
Is he in rambunctious in turnout? Those are the hardest to keep on. Mud and going downhill are not friendly to bar shoes either.
Shoe Secures absolutely saved my life with a chronic overreacher. I have no association with the company, but I am eternally grateful to them for existing! www.shoesecure.com
Absolutely no other way I’ve found to keep shoes on one that’s talented at getting them off.
I contacted the company to see if they would fit a bar shoe. I see on their FB page someone uses a bell boot over the shoe secure. If they will fit a bar shoe, I’m getting 2 pair!
Vic is short back with a long rear stride . We event so mud and downhill is part of it. I’m going to try the shoe secure and a bell boot over during work.
I figured as much.
I wish you luck on finding a solution and no missing shoes!
I just ordered 2 sets after sending them pictures of my guys foot and shoe. Fingers crossed! They are doing the riding mod to one pair.
