fashion advice! first schooling show back riding as an adult!

Hi Everyone,

Back riding again and I have a schooling show for my barn in November. I am deciding what to wear and what I need to get. I have some of my show clothing from like 6 years ago but most of it seems pretty “out” from what I have been seeing lately. Also, should I just wear tan breeches, tall boots, and a white show shirt for the show? Or should I wear a hunt coat as well ( navy). Keep in mind that I ride in the Northeast and it will probably be pretty chilly on a November morning.

What do you think? Also… I am suuuuper nervous to compete as an adult… :smiley:

good luck at your show= what classes will you be doing? Feel free to join us on the re-rider thread- lots of great support. Only thing is, we LOVE pictures, so that’s a must for joining. I was beyond nervous my first show as a re-rider. Great instructor and great horse/pony are key. Now that I found an instructor that gets re-riders, it makes it so much easier. My first show back, I did not have that.

I would stick with the tan breeches, tall boots and a nice neutral (darker) colored sweater with maybe a collared shirt underneath. Having a dark raincoat on hand is a good idea too… or a winter jacket for our area lol!!

I’ve only ever competed as an adult, so it seems like nervous is my normal emotion bahahaha! Best of luck at your show and if you can (or want to lol) post photos, that would be awesome!

Talk to your instructor for sure. I honestly haven’t broken in my tall boots so I’ve been doing the schooling shows in nice half chaps (not the suede ones, but ones that actually look tall boot like). A lot of others do that here for the schooling shows, but you’ll want to check with the show rules on if that is permissible. A light color breech (tan, some still do the rust color but very far and few between), black gloves, black helmet, very light color or white show shirt, dark colored show jacket. Sounds like what you have should be fine.

Definitely ask your instructor if people usually wear coats. Some schooling shows are super casual, and some require full show attire.

I have an equestrian blog and often discuss hunter/jumper fashion and do reviews on clothes I love- my last 2 product reviews were both show shirts. Feel free to check it out if you want ideas on what’s “in” and functional for the show ring these days!

(I do not make money off my blog and purchase all products myself!)

Best of luck and keep us updated!

@HJdaydream I love your blog name :wink:

@rockonxox Gracias!!! :winkgrin:

Thank you all :smiley:

I am doing flat EQ and EQ over fences…

Where are you showing?

It would depend on the formality of the show. There are some that prefer/require the full on get up but there is also some that prefer a more casual turnout (polo instead of jacket and shirt). If a more casual show I would wear tall boots, tan/cream/beige breeches and either a white polo or a dark polo (think navy, black, hunter green).
