Fashion and horses

Thought this might be an interesting topic

Well, I’m.nlt going to subscribe to Apple News to read this.

English riding fashions reflect what was trendy day wear for men circa 1820s when fox hunting took off as more fields were enclosed by fences. Tight pale colored suede pants, knee high boots, frock coats and stock ties. We are all cosplaying Lord Byron in the show ring.

Bits of more modern equestrian style cyclically work back into fashion, including tall flat heels riding boots, blazers, and equestrian themed prints on scarves. English riding show outfits have a sleek elegant look and can be seen as having wealth cachet.

Also many of the big luxury European leathergoods companies such as Hermes actually started as saddlelry and harness makers.

And of course ā€œcowboy styleā€ jeans, workwear shirts, boots, belts, are all over North America especially the West.

You gave up too easily, Scribbler. Here’s the direct link.

It’s pretty much a puff-piece, but it is W magazine, the home of fashion puff-pieces!

And, not to be out-done, here’s Vogue’s take on the Gucci loafer (in observation of its 70th birthday):

The price for a pair of these shoes? Oh, about enough to keep two horses shod for 12 to 18 weeks (aka $920).

So, a bargain really!

Loafers had a comeback moment a few years ago especially with slightly chunky soles.

I bought some in what I thought was a lovely croc leather. My more fashionable sisters said I thought wrong. So the loafers languish in my closet gathering dust.

??? What are they? Human skin? :open_mouth:
Piffle to your fashionista sisters!
If you like them, wear them!

I mean they might be fake croc but I thought they were lovely!

They are very comfortable too. I might bust them out for work at least

Thank you for the working link; I couldn’t access the other one.

I had no idea the bit loafers dated back to 1953. I was not aware of them then, being but 1 year old. The ones I had were some time in the '60s. I don’t remember if they were Bass, Dexter, Old Maine Trotters, or Sperry, but I had at least one pair and IIRC, two. I loved them!
But I wanted a pair with pelham bits, complete with curb chains lol.

Do it! Don’t let other people nix the clothes or shoes that you like.

Of course, if you have to meet incredibly fancy/formal people at an incredibly fancy/formal function, don’t wear a t-shirt. Other than that, your style is your own and don’t let anyone tell you differently. :+1:

Since my earliest childhood memories, i will wear anything horsey. english-horsey much more than western. One of my favorite belts is a lovely real hobble. I have horse pins but don’t wear them. Same with pendants. (maybe i’ll do up a miniture christmas tree using them!) Now that i’m immersed in an actual herd of horses, i don’t need to wear motifs. But i still like them. I’ve three or four* Hermes big scarves. And i actually wear them around town in the winter. Not one person here in this tiny rural town has ever recognized one of them!!! Lol…but one woman i occasionally lunch with (at the senior center) …an attorney, noted that it was appropriate that i wear ā€˜horse scarves’. LOL.

*or four…because a mouse chewed into one of them. If i’m careful i can totally obscure that area in the folds, as the scarf is huge. But if it slides off or if i take it off of course that hole (actually it is two separate holes because it was folded when the goddamn mouse chewed it) is right there. grrrrrrr. I hate those meeces to peeces!!!

Oh dear.

There are so many niches and ā€œaestheticsā€ in fashion these days, as I see both on YT and IRL, and at least on YT, surrounded by much gate keeping and emphatic what’s in/what’s out statements

Your sisters could well have a coherent sense of style within their own chosen niche or aesthetic that isn’t remotely your style. Do you want to dress like they do? Would their clothes suit your body type or skin and hair tone? Would they suit your lifestyle and daily routine? If in general your answers to these questions are ā€œnope,ā€ then you don’t need to take advice from them.

When I had DH’s saddle remade into a purse, I used parts of my TB’s bridle.
Browband w/brass clinchers is the handle.
Laced reins are shoulder strap.
His fave bit - early curved-mouthpiece snaffle, a Balkenhol - is part of the shoulder strap, but dang! it’s heavy!
