Fashion mavens: mixing black tack with brown riding wear

Adding a twist on the perpetual discussion of brown in the show ring. Say you have black tack, how do you wear brown in the show ring? Brown boots and jacket, black helmet and gloves? Anyone seen any fantastic brown coats lately?

I love the mix of black and tan, and even black and chocolate brown. I have all black tack, and brown Mountain Horse Sovereigns. Trying to figure out how to integrate brown into my show attire.

Ready…Go!

I’ve always heard that the saddle and bridle should match, and the coat/boots/gloves (unless white) should match. So if you have black tack, match your brown boots with a brown coat. Personally, I think gloves and helmets can go either way!

I used to show in brown tack (saddle and bridle), cream pad, black tall boots, helmet and gloves, light beige/tan breeches and brown coat.
I liked it

With black tack and brown boots, you would do best with a brown coat. Then you could pick black/brown or white gloves and either a black or brown helmet. A white or cream pad with brown or black (or both) piping would be nice too. Just be sure you look at all the browns in different lighting. Sometimes they look fine together inside, but not so much outside on a sunny day.

We love black and brown here . . . I mean, just look at bay horses - a gorgeous natural color combination!

Having said that, I either use all black tack or all brown tack. But when I evented for XC I had brown saddle and bridle, black boots, brown breeches, white polo shirt, and black safety vest. I thought I looked pretty good with my bay horse!

I agree with others that if you’re going to do brown boots with dressage tack, then look at something other than black for your coat.
