I am looking for an inexpensive extra fat supplement to help my dressage competition horse from losing weight during a lot of travel. He currently gets amplify and coconut oil but he doesn’t seem to always eat the coconut oil. Is there a good alternative for me to try instead of the coconut oil that others have used and seen results with?
Flax seed?
Amplify is a grat product, can you drop the oil and up the amplify? I will also feed my young horse a sr. grain if needed. ProElite low sugar/low starch.
I’ve found Cool Calories to be very palatable for several thin picky eaters, and also echo the suggestion of upping the Amplify.
What’s the issue with the coconut oil, do you think - taste, or texture? How much are you feeding per meal?
Canola is about the cheapest oil you can use. Cool Calories does have quite a strong smell which might, or might not, be a hit.
But what’s the rest of his diet?
He gets 3 lbs of ultium 1lbs of amplify and 1/2 lbs of supersport, 1/2 cup of coconut oil per feeding (twice a day)
I’m pretty sure it is the taste and smell of the coconut oil, he can be a little particular about treats and such but he’s not overly picky and will eat most things.
With canola do you worry with it being a palm oil?
What are thoughts on rice bran oil vs flaxseed as a fat supplement?
I don’t, tbh. I’m sure there are some products labeled “canola oil” that contain some palm oil, but by law it would be on the ingredient list. There are sustainably sourced palm oils as well, it’s not all a bad thing If it’s a concern for you, choose one that’s labeled “pure canola”. So it won’t be “a palm oil” but it could potentially contain some palm oil
If you’re talking flax oil vs rice bran oil, then flax oil is more $$ but provides beneficial Omega 3 for horses not eating any/enough grass. Rice bran is high in Omega 6 which is already plentiful in horses’ diets.
If it’s oil of any kind, vs flaxseed, you can provide more calories from oil since it’s straight fat, and there’s a limit to how much flax you should feed, I wouldn’t feed more than 2c for a large horse. But you could split the difference and feed 1c flax, then some straight oil
I like pelleted rice bran, and have never had a horse that would not eat it.
Mine won’t. He went off of his Renew Gold after eating it for a few years, wouldn’t touch pelleted rice bran, and then just went off his powered rice bran after a year and can’t be talked into it again. I was browsing this thread for ideas to replace .
1 of mine won’t touch rice bran either, not in any form. I REALLY wanted him to, he needs the calories, I thought it would be a good taste, but he thinks otherwise. 5 years ago, when he didn’t need the calories, he might have loved it
I have a little mini mare with Cushing’s that needs a fat supplement. She’s a picky eater from hay to horse feed so it’s trial and error with her. She’s on Buckeye Ultimate Finish 100. It’s partially hydrogenated vegetable fat. It’s in granule form with a flavor that’s supposed to be caramel. It smells a lot like Cool Calories. Formerly I tried Cool Calories but the mare wouldn’t touch it. Buckeye nutrition has pelleted versions of weight gain supplements with rice bran and other things but my mare needed the simplest form of fat with nothing else due to founder issues.
A full-sized horse could receive up to 8 oz of the supplement. Sarah gets just about a tablespoon. I’d give her more but she doesn’t eat it.
The Ultimate 100 has helped her keep weight on with winter conditions even though she’s eating less than recommended. It has helped her odd Cushing’s coat a bit, too.
