I’m lucky to have a heated indoor that’s kept above freezing, and ride in a long-sleeve tech shirt with a pack-lite down jacket. I may start off chilly, but work up a light sweat, so need to launder the jacket every week or so. I ride 2-3 horses/day. What workout jackets give you a light layer of warmth, but can stand up to frequent washing? Inexpensive, breathable (non-fleecy) would be great so I can get a couple and have a spare. Doesn’t have to be a horsey brand. Thanks!!
For lighter, cheap barn, chore and riding jackets, try places like Walmart men and boy’s departments.
I got one there, navy color, a good 30 years ago, washed to death, but it refuses to die.
I would like to get a new one, but this one is still fine, bigger pockets for gloves, smaller tools, snaps, treats, flashlights and odds and ends, fits over hoodies and vests, is surprisingly warm in the worst weather, but still not too warm.
Seems to be some kind of soft canvas, not like the stiffer Carhartt ones and best, doesn’t shock horses in our super dry lizard weather.
I like the old fashioned quilted “barn jackets”- mine is an Ariat one that must be 15 years old and still going strong if a bit faded!
I just checked Dover and they have Noble Outfitter canvas jackets with quilted lining made for riding. They are on sale for $97!
LL Bean has similar ones a bit pricier.
i’m a fan of alpaca sweaters. I layer them. They’re lightweight and really snuggly and warm. They don’t make any zswoosh noises either.
While not a jacket, I use a down vest from Lands End. When on sale, you can get them for $30 to $40. I prefer them over jackets as they keep me warm, but I tend to not get over heated in them.
Columbia with Omni Heat vests are my go-to. They make jackets as well but I prefer having my arms free. Bonus: they are cheaper at outlet stores!
I use a Squall jacket from Land’s End. Just the basic jacket. I got mine this year for about $35. Water resistant, easy to layer. I may order another one for non-barn activities since I have a 60% off code to use by the 21st.

Thanks for all the ideas. While looking into some of the suggestions, I stumbled on Overstock.com. Got the Paige & Tuttle athletic layering jacket for about $19 after a coupon code and free shipping!
