I ordered a Rambo Duo this fall - the 100 gram blanket with the 300 gram liner - and it is waterproof. I actually ordered two, but the one for my other horse is still sitting in the bag. I supposed I should get it out and try it out.
That is really good to hear. My plan then is to get the retailers to allow me to exchange for a Duo then. WOW - $549!?!?!
SmartPak also has some of the Premier blankets, but they are mostly getting shipped directly from the UK. In Big Blanket Order #1 for Lola, from SmartPak, the Premier Equine blankets arrived directly from the UK, 3 days before the rest of the order. I am not sure about how prices compare.
I am, too! They look intriguing. Seriously considering picking one up just out of curiosity and because you can never have too many blankets…right??
I pretty much always only buy them on sale, so got the Duo for $400. If you got your blankets on sale, I would try to convince the retailer to give you the same discount on your exchange.
FWIW I’ve been happy with my Pessoa that I ordered this year. Adams was having a sale, I got it for around $100.
I ordered a Rhino Wug last year, in the new color for the year, knock wood it’s held up just fine. I washed it in Nikwax this past summer and air-dried it.
Really good to know on both. It seemed from the thread upstream that the Rhino Wugs are tighter in the shoulders than the Rambos? I’ll try a Pessoa too. $100 seems like someone is giving it to me!
I’m pretty happy with the Horze Avalanche I bought for $75 from Chick’s. It’s supposed to be 150 grams, but it seems more like a 100 gram at most. I have 50 and 100 gram Weatherbeetas, and this seems like it’s in between. I’m not mad, because it’s perfect for the weather we’ve been having this month. I like the chest strap design so far, as my mare tends to somehow yank off the regular type with buckles.
I find both Rhino and Amigo to be snugger in the shoulders than I’d like. My mare gets a rub on the one shoulder she always has forward. I don’t have any Rambo’s to compare it to.
The Pessoa I bought was the one with a hood, 150 gram. Yeah, for a hundred bucks I figured I wouldn’t cry too much if it didn’t last long.
That has been my experience (comparing Rambo Supremes to various Rhinos and Amigos.)
All of my Pessoas have lasted about a year before the waterproofing totally failed. I still have one sheet that I use when it’s dry to protect low-man’s BOT sheet, but I have yet to be able to revive the waterproofing. I wish they held up better because I am a sucker for plaid and would have everyone outfitted in coordinating plaids if they’d work
We got an inch+ of rain in about 18 hrs (sprinkles mixed with hour-long downpours) today and all the horses refused to use their shelter because of course not. Two are in PEs and one is in a Shires Highlander because it was what was easy to grab. All are dry and toasty.
I still can’t stop thinking about the Bow Horse blankets…and I could use another 100gm…for $200 I may just try one. We’ll see how much sense I lose between now and Christmas.
I have Wugs in Rambo, Rhino, and Amigo for two of my mares. I don’t find them to be significantly different in the shoulders, personally. I do think that the drop is a tad shorter on the Rhinos than the others. FWIW, ages ago, I spoke with Horseware about sizing and they told me the cut is the same across all of their lines of blankets.
In my experience, the biggest difference in fit is between sheets and anything with insulation. The insulation seems to make the blankets not slide back as much. I feel like the sheets always seem tighter on the shoulders than the insulated blankets.
Also, I didn’t buy all of these blankets all at once, so it’s possible that they have tweaked their cuts over the years. Actually, I feel like they must have done so. I have a very old Rambo Wug in heavyweight - the purple one with the green binding that was actually made in Ireland. It’s definitely a more narrow fit than newer ones.
Thanks for all this detail. Very helpful. Just this morning I was pulling the 200gm Rambo w high neck (navy and silver) and the quality of that old girl is remarkable. The triple closure in the front with the two velcros and two additional buckles is such an important safety feature. The blanket has always fit any of my horses too. It has to be 10 years old and still going strong.
I had an old Tough One out the other day and the idea of just two buckles in front just doesn’t cut it for me. LOVE a V front closure.
I replaced the defective Supreme 1680 with the Duo. It’s Already proven to be waterproof, I’m more than thrilled.
Me too. This is such a sticking point for me, I just don’t want to go back to buckles
The Bow Horse with the v front is really intriguing. I also found this brand:
(Available at a variety of European shops, in various weights, and I think I saw a wug style cut, too?)
But they look at only come in 800 some odd denier and geez, is that enough??
I haven’t seen any other v clip front style offerings. I guess a blanket repair person could modify a brand that uses buckles, but how does that screw with the entire fit?
Ugh, sigh.
Interesting you should say that. I was JUST looking at the Duo and that is so reassuring it’s waterproof. Are you saying the retailer took care of you already? I still have not heard from the two I bought from and hadn’t followed up.
Right? Doesn’t seem it could last. They do have 5 star reviews but we need a translator.
Yes, I emailed their help desk. Sent multiple photos, description of my issues & pictures of serial #'s. I did have to pay the difference for the upgrade.
OK thank you so good to know . Did you ship the blanket back first?
Adams does leave the blanket return decision to Horseware. Because of the 3 yr warranty. Horseware does send out a shipping label. I didn’t ask for a refund, just wanted one that worked.
