Favorite 100g Turnout Blanket - 2022 edition

I’m not, but give it a whirl. If they don’t deliver it’s just not that hard to dispute the charge.

If VAT isn’t automatically removed for a US address, though, do contact them before you order. It’s a pretty significant sum that you don’t have to pay.

Sweet! Look forward to your review. AND the Premier arrives today (that was fast delivery) and I’ll be right back to ya’ll with my review.

And yes I’m talking about strap inside the tail flap. It helps them LIFT the backside flap UP and away from their body.

Hmmm. I don’t see how it’s a risk. Does anyone have thoughts on that?

And for anyone else interested in the BOW and my finding that it was too tight in the shoulder thought pics of my girl might help. I wouldn’t say she has big shoulders.

One more thing to snag, especially if they rub their butt. If the elastic has a lot of spring, it can become a projectile when it breaks free, although usually the elastic on them isn’t that springy. Depending on the weight and fit of the tail flap, it can limit mobility of the tail.

My horses really don’t care for them, so I never use them. :woman_shrugging: When I try to use them, they usually swish and rub until they get their tails free.

Thanks. For sure that Bow blanket would be tight on my horse.

Which PE did you order? I’ve wondered if the one with the super high shoulder gusset would help fit my horse, but the whole shoulder thing is compounded by a very deep neck at the base. That Buddy plus size might be more suited to my dude.

Thanks for the tip re the VAT.

My horse is pretty gentle with his clothes, it’s light use due to climate and nobody is biting him so I’m not particularly concerned about the lower denier. It’s the fit that’s always a problem (though he’s survived many seasons of standard cut blankets). I just prefer for his clothes to be comfortable as possible . And that plus line looks like just the right thing.

Yep, I cut those loops off. They can so easily get caught on something if your horse brushes up on a post or fence, but especially in a stall or run in. It also limits tail mobility - evidenced by the poopy tail cords and broken hairs. My horses don’t have a ton of tail hair to spare so I’ll preserve them any way I can

If the idea of the loop is to keep the tail flap from blowing around in the wind, that’s easily addressed by an oversized tail flap. Which most quality blankets have these days anyways.

I could see that strap as being a risk to tail injury… here’s how…
maresy suddenly grew a yak like coat this year. in past winters
maresy stayed pretty slick all winter with just a short but thicker winter coat.
She also hated winter chill.
we are in Central Fl. sigh.
She would previously almost crawl into her blankets. She loved them.

This year she has twice almost removed her 0gm. Rambo Original. By morning she had
rolled the blanket 3/4 of way up to her neck over her back.
I’ve never used leg straps or the tail strap. Have never needed them. But she also twisted the blanket around her belly all askew.
Either she was too warm or she
didn’t like the neck opening so snug as I removed the chest extension because she lost weight since last winter.
Had she had her tail in the strap I
suspect it wouldn’t be pretty.
For now she’s going unblanketed til it gets colder or cold and windy and damp.

That’s a good point. If the blanket gets loose or the strap gets twisted, it could most definitely result in a tail injury.

Glad your horse was uninjured!

Sorry to hear the Bow blanket didn’t work for you.

I just ordered it in no fill as I’ve had zero rubs and no mane rub even at the withers. It fits my upright necked horse really well.

Me too. Maybe it would work with the zero fill. There’s lots to like about it. Really liked the hood attachment too.

Do you ever put a liner under it?

Ok well so interesting. I thought it helped lift the flap away from their body during manure and were a good thing. Never thought of it as a danger.

I don’t see how it would impact how the horse is able to lift the tail flap to poop. The tail is under the flap whether or not it’s through the little strap, and the lift is the same?

But it should be super easy for a blanket repair person to add one, if it’s important for you!

I’ve used it with a stable blanket under cause I was running late and needed to turn out and it was raining for one morning. :joy: otherwise the weather hasn’t been cold enough to need a liner yet. I ordered 2 new liners.

The 100 fill has been perfect for those days where it’s raining and in the high 30’s-40’s. It’s held up to pouring rain and no issues with leaking or moving around even in 30 mph winds or when horse is doing his best rodeo impression.

I can toss it on the QH for a week when it gets colder but he runs hot so unless it’s in the teens he’s in a no fill sheet.

Thank you for this review! Saved me the wondering, lol.

No front v straps, but my PEs all have a tail flap strap. I love it.

Ok, my review on the Premier Equine - Buster Storm 90g Combo Turnout Rug with Classic Neck × 1
Burgundy / 6’3" - $198.00 with shipping came to $247. It’s an 840D ballistic nylon and beaded up nicely in the rain. Well made overall and I’m keeping it - but mostly because I’m in a tight spot right now with so few waterproof options.

The 90gram was too warm for my thin coated mare but it was 45 degrees with little wind. If I were to try another one I’d upgrade to the Titan and drop to a 50 gram and use my Rambo liners when needed.

The materials are all quality. Unfortunately the shoulders felt tight again and noticed when my mare was stretched down to the ground it was tight at her withers and rump. My guy was in his Rambo Original, same size, and no tightness. So if I ordered another from them I’d try going up a size.

The Titan line has a triple fold on the velcro. I’d rather that.

The front felt nicely closed and wouldn’t gap

Nice coverage on her booty

The shoulders were feeling a wee bit tight and we’d know in a couple hours because she gets pissed if there’s any tightness. And she did. I only have her blanketed because she had major dental work and needed to be extra warm and have been waiting for temps to come up and get her coat fluffed again.

So will try on my guy when the temps drop a bit and post back. Here you can see her moving in it and see the snugness at her shoulders.

So I’m keeping it but worry it might need to be a temp blanket OR I need to order up if I’m going to try another one. And, would order the Titan to get the triple velcro.

Hope this helps.

Re: velcro, I asked PE about this! My sheets, half neck, and heavy all have the “sandwich” triple velcro so I was surprised to receive a medium with the single strip. They said they’ve updated all the Buster designs to have the sandwich velcro now. I ordered all of mine from smartpak though, so I probably just received older stock. I wonder if PE would let you exchange?

For others looking for PE comps:
I can’t speak to a lightweight other than a sheet, but I think my 220g Schneiders feels heavier than the 250g PE and my 400g Rambo feels about the same as the 420g PE. The Rambo velcro system is the best/strongest, but I’ve already had one replaced due to a completely failed neck cover attachment and other stitching issues. PE and Rambo hardware are similar. The 2yo Schneiders is showing a lot of seam wear, lost a tail flap velcro strip, and I really dislike how the neck cover gapes with the cutback when his head is down. Drop is similar on PE and Schneiders, but Schneiders topline is more contoured. So far PEs wash easily and dry the fastest. Infuriatingly, all neck covers of all brands rub the same spot of mane out. At least the PE and Rambo covers are seamless. This will be the first full season for the PEs, hoping they continue to hold up well. :woman_shrugging:

Yes, sandwich velcro - much better description. I didn’t know that Smartpak carries them? What a great idea on the exchange.

Can you talk about sizing? My guys are 75 in Rambo but it felt tight in the shoulders on the PE.
