Favorite 100g Turnout Blanket - 2022 edition

I bought two Rambo Duos - 100 grams with a 300 gram liner.

I actually just got the second one out of the bag a couple of days ago and was a bit worried about its performance in the rain given this thread. But it’s definitely waterproof. As is the first one (two different horses).

For people looking to get in touch with Horseware about their problems, maybe try FB Messenger?

And which blanket is this exactly? $50 is hard to even wrap my head around. With my new horse and knowing I’d need backups I have probably spent $2k this October/November on Rambos. That number is not far off. Two 1680s, an Autumn Series, and an Original with Leg Arches. NONE of which are waterproof.

That’s insane to spend so much on blankets.

Has anyone looked at these?

It seems it is unavailable now. I bought it via Amazon, the picture above is from my purchases but the product is no longer available on Amazon.

I mean, I have no expectations for this blanket. I bought it because I was trying to outfit my growing horse as cheaply as possible. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how nice it is, though.

I was mostly happy with the dirt cheap Derby House blankets I bought off Ride Away for her last year, too, although the cut on those were wonkier.

Cheap blankets can be found; it’s actually a lot easier to get a decent cheap blanket these days than it used to be! No one needs Rambos. With that said, I still generally prefer Rambos and Amigos because they have lasted me absolutely forever and consistently fit my animals nicely.

This is definitely why I’ve bought Rambo–it’s been the only blanket where I just don’t have to worry about rubbing at ALL and (in the past) the proofing has just been indestructible. My guys were out in that pissing rain all afternoon and into evening and of course they don’t stand in the shed. Dry as a bone beneath their 6+ year old Rambo wugs that have never been reproofed.

I feel like I’m kind of hard on my blankets in general…definitely not one of those people who gets them lovingly washed and proofed at the end of every season :joy: But the Rambos have just never let me down, and that’s been worth the price.

This news about brand new blankets failing is just such a bummer. Nothing else has ever fit as well.

Although still waiting for that Busse blanket to show up, and curious to see how that does!

Exactly!

My horses aren’t hard on blankets in the sense they don’t tear them up. But I jokingly call my one horse “the Walrus” because she seems to relish in standing out in the wettest of weather. Yet her ancient Rambos and Amigos and even her recently purchased Rhino blanket all stay dry through it.

Then at the end of the season, I throw them in my washer with a bit of whatever cheap detergent I have in my laundry room. They get tossed over a fence in the sun to dry, usually getting left way longer they should before I remember to stuff them into a trash bag to store them away until next year.

No special treatment for these blankets, yet they keep doing their job year after year. :woman_shrugging:

That’s a bummer. I am a diehard Rambo fan. I was about to purchase another too.

My only issue with Premier Equine is that they are heavy, especially so when wet. For whatever reason they’re just heavier than others. There is a notable difference between my 100g Rambo vs 100g PE, especially when wet. Otherwise PE is generally OK.

I have and I bought one last year, but sent it back. The quality seemed OK and I really can’t recall why I returned it. My brain is coming up blank  I am thinking it was too small. My young horse was between sizes, and I am thinking that’s why I sent it back, and he grew into something I already had.

They do ship quick, and I’ve bought other things from them in the past.

I ventured into the world of “cheap blankets” with this young one. He has almost grown into my old horse’s extensive collection of mostly Rambo blankets. I bought a cheap Challenger sheet from Amazon last year and that was waterproof. An Eskadron that I found on sale worked too. Not crazy about it, but good for the price. He wore his 150g Centaur quite a bit recently and no complaints about that, but I think ultimately his figure will be “too full” for that one.

What I was impressed with was my 1680 300g from Chick’s saddlery. It was cheap (they often have sales), fit well, and the quality for the price was very good. Kept him warm and dry. Not sure about longevity or rubbing issues, since it was only worn a few times.

I’ve always had the best luck with Jeffers and great customer service! I’ve gotten some steals on really nice blankets. And the one time I had a problem with a blanket arriving for my mini that was missing buckles, they quickly rectified the situation and sent out the parts I needed.

I’ve had a tough go. Maybe they are understaffed and in a knot right now. They did send a return label and confirmed they are refunding me for the blanket so I am happy and would say I will order again from them and your review is meaningful.

I have Nikwax wash and rug proof on order from Amazon.

I ordered a PE blanket yesterday. I hope it will fit my boy well enough. I got the medium Buster through SmartPak so easy return if the fit is not useable. The price is right so that’s nice.

I sprang for the 3 day shipping which has already been pushed to 6 days; less nice.

I was looking at this one, and went digging around - this model never specifically states it is waterproof. Unlike the Titan model that says “waterproof”, the Buster says “keeps your horse warm, dry, and comfortable” but never says anything about waterproof. Just 850 ballistic nylon, etc.

It’s a great price but that specific lack of language made me nervous. Why wouldn’t it say the word “waterproof” if it is, and the company will stand by it? Y’all with the Buster please check in with the status on that!

The manufacturer says it’s waterproof!

Ah see - I even went looking for that on their site and couldn’t find it! I stare at a screen too much at work…

I hear you! It’s easy to overlook stuff.

If the PE cut fits my horse I’ll likely order addtl weights directly from the UK. If not I’ll probably try the Busse blankets in the plus size cuts.

SmartPak also has an “oversize” cut now but not yet in the 50 - 100 gram weights. But I did order a medium in that for my mom’s elderly draft. If it doesn’t get here before this next cold snap he’ll be dressed like a hobo in some of my back up blankets.

I have 4??? maybe 5… I think Busters and they’ve all been every bit as waterproof as the Titans!

This weekend I picked up one of my horses that I loaned out to a friend to keep her old man company. I knew he’d be scruffy, but didn’t expect to find rain rot under his coat. Sigh. Picked up an el-cheapo Amigo Mio on clearance at the feed store because I don’t want to deal with trying to de-fungus one of his nice blankets. Came out to a wet horse over his rump this morning. Most of the blanket seems waterproof but not over the hindquarters. Gah. At least it was a warm storm.

I too have been a diehard Rambo and was willing to spend the extra for fabulous fit, no rubs, design and security in the closures, breathable and waterproof. All that REALLY matters in a horse turned out in bad weather. Anyone who has kept horses on 24/7 or stalled knows they stand out in the rain sometimes. Just standing there. Cold, wet ears. I hate it. So super duper quality matters.

Here’s my 1680 and the Original w Leg Arches from a couple days ago. Soaked through into the liners.

During weather like this you really need a back up blanket to pull and replace if you bring them in to work or handle.

Can you post a pic of exatly what you ordered? They have several options. Thank you!

Alrighty, the Busse arrived yesterday. Here are the details:

Ordered here

https://www.equishop.com/en/winter-horse-rugs-up-to-500-gr-or-more/31543-busse-flexible-pro-250-horse-turnout-rug.html

On 12/22

I purchased the Flexible Pro in 250 g. This blanket also comes in 100 g and 50 g of fill (and maybe a sheet?) It’s 840 denier. This is a German brand, and they have other lines, but none with a higher denier. They also make a wug cut, and a plus cut, for thicker horses.

Here’s the website for the brand itself:

I paid $225 all in, for this blanket, the matching hood, and shipping. It shipped from Poland.

Here’s the horse in his 100g Rambo. He stands 16h and wears a 75" in Rambo.

And here he is in the Busse. Sizing is different–it’s back length? This is a 140cm. Which looks to be about the right length.

You can see that the drop is a little shorter.

The blanket has padding at the wither:

The tail flap is very generous (no strap for the tail inside the tail flap)

And it comes with a covered butt strap. It does have rings installed for leg straps, too.

The lining is this soft non satin fabric. It feels cosy, but also like it will collect stuff

Something that gives me a bit of pause is this weird dart on the neckline

Maybe it’s there to keep the blanket from binding around the shoulder? Unsure.

It’s pretty light and weighs 6.4 pounds. In comparison, this horse’s medium wug (different cut than this blanket, so not a straight line comparison) is 8.8 pounds.

Overall, it’s a nice blanket. It’s less of a copy of a Rambo than I’d hoped. We may be back down to temps that call for this fill next week, so I’ll see how it goes then.

Huh. I just realized the front closure is a little different than shown on the website.

Here’s what I have:

And here’s the site:

No second layer on what I got :-/
