Favorite around-the-showgrounds pants

I’m on the hunt yet again for good pants to wear at shows when I’m not in breeches. The default for folks at least in eventing and dressage seems to be jeans, especially skinny jeans, but I’m a bad millennial and no longer like wearing skinny jeans, and denim in general isn’t the most comfortable in humid and hot Midatlantic summers, especially when I already overheat in breeches.

I’m trying to find pants (not shorts) that are breathable, hold up to show-barn life, and have decent pockets for rags and hanging spray bottles. And don’t look schlubby/ do look put together but not try hard (no khakis).

What are your favorites to wear between classes as a DIY ammie?

Scrubs - not pretty but I like the boxiness for airflow

a good apron over your breeches if you’re working around your horse- there are some cool ones out now that tiktok made cooking cool again LOL

I no longer show but I like hiking pants in technical fabrics from Columbia (and the like) that reach to the knee. paired with breathable and supportive hiking type footwear I’m happy. Shorts are just gross because my thighs get grubby and I notice it vs grubby shins I don’t really notice til I get in the shower

I like the sun protection of pants over shorts or capris. I’ll do capris for running but a full day in the sun? My ghostly white legs say it’s a no-go.
I haven’t considered scrubs before, I feel like someone has to make attractive scrubs by now, right?

Lightweight hiking pants. Loose, breathable, lots of pockets. I found a pair on Amazon for a good price that I’ve really like.

I’m old and rectangular shaped. I’m past trying for cute, I’m fully in ‘does it have elastic?’

Elastic is a great feature of hiking pants. :grinning:

I’m seeing recommendations for the fjallraven high coast lite and the prAna halle pant II when searching for curve-friendly hiking pants, any thoughts? It’s been years since I tried anything prAna and I only know fjallraven for their backpacks.

I wear scrubs over my show breeches to keep them clean but otherwise I hate wearing scrubs because I have to do so in my day job. I most often wear jeans when I’m on the grounds and not getting ready for a class but for sun shirts and now pants I found some great deals when there have been sales on golf sun shirts and golf pants, often less expensive than jeans or specific riding clothes. Also I’ve found specific styles of golf pants to be very comfortable and not as hot as jeans.

Agree that hiking pants are the way to go. Especially if you aren’t a leggings person.

I’m going to be redundant and say hiking pants. If you get them roomy they will also fit over breeches to keep you clean. Just don’t do what I did and grab both pairs at the same time and pull them down .

I wear the Prana Halle pants for work and travel and think they are great, the fabric has just the right amount of give and does not stain easily and they have nice pockets. I need pants with at 34" inseam and the Halles are one of the few hiking type pants that come in a size 4 with a long inseam option.

A friend’s daughter would wear the track pants during chillier weather, the kind with snaps down the leg seams. I knew someone else who had oversized overalls. They had to be wider to get off and on easily over her breeches.

I do have a pair of LL Bean Vista Camp hiking pants. I think those are the ones.

But I also discovered Skecher’s Go Walk pants. If I’m totally getting out of my show clothes and looking for comfort for the rest of the day, these are my favorite. They’re stretchy with pockets and the fit is between breeches and jeans. Very comfortable and come in several colors.

Both are fabulous and come in different lengths. The Halles are very popular for hiking, work, general use pants, and shed stains with a little stretch too.

You’ll pay out the nose for Fjallraven but you can’t beat the quality.

Duluth Trading Company makes some good budget options if paying $90+ for “around the barn” pants makes you cringe. Prana and Fjallraven are going to be more durable, attractive, and higher quality, but at a certain point they’re still going to be barn pants :joy:

I have a hobby orchard and wear a lot of this: https://dovetailworkwear.com/collections/pants or https://dovetailworkwear.com/collections/overalls-for-women

overalls/coveralls can be over breeches, leggings, bike shorts, nike pros/tempos, or nothing.

I find myself wearing my lululemon dance studio joggers most days while at horse shows!

Lightweight, comfortable, quick drying if you spill something on yourself. Deep enough pockets with a zipper pocket so you can tuck keys/cash away without losing it. Mine were purchased a bit baggier so I can easily layer them over breeches if I’m trying to stay clean for a class. I like the tapered leg as easy to stuff into rain boots if raining.

Hardy enough to hold up a full day, quick wash at night and they will be dry by the next day.

I’m a big fan of the Lulu Dance Pants. Wearing them right now on the way to an event!

I like the Dovetail pants. They carry an Ultra lightweight pant, though most are canvas or denim.

So, so many pockets! And big pockets!

Well I went to REI to try the prana Halle II and I’m getting a pair - they’re true to size and the short length was perfect for me. I’m a little worried about how sweat will show through but that’s a concern for all pants tbh. I showed my spouse and the response I got “Yup, those are adult pants” so I guess they don’t look too much like hiking pants.
