Favorite baroque-build old-style Morgan stallions

I’d love to see some of everyone’s favorite old-style compact and thick Morgan stallions that are currently alive and standing - ones with less Saddlebred influence. Ones bred more for sport outside the Morgan breed show world. Show me your eye candy!

The statesman morgans are exceptional for sport. Unfortunately, Lynne Shpak recently passed away, but I’m hoping that they continue the breeding program.

Statesmans Signature, Statesmans Eclipse and Statesmans Silhouette have followed in their sire’s footsteps, there’s also Statesmans Skyhawk (a beautiful buckskin stallion who unfortunately hasn’t done much - not his fault) There are a number of offspring that are just wonderful that are listed in the pdf that I supplied above.

Do a google search for “Funquest Morgans”, simply the best lines for classic Morgans very suited for sport.

DJJJ Ebony Gold. My endurance mare is by him and I’ve seen several other of his offspring- He is a phenomenal producer

My friends have FCF Esprit de Lark on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

I don’t mean to offend, but this post made me laugh. The breeder/owner of FCF was banned from Morgans for breeding Saddlebreds and passing them off as Morgans. FCF Rhythm Nation (World Champion Morgan Stallion) was proven to be half Saddlebred and caused a huge divide in the breed.

Iron Forge Starman, UVM Springfield, Otter Brook Xenophon
GKB Coal Magic has had success in the dressage ring but is a young stallion.
Bruce Ekstrom was suspended as the Breeder of the horses bred to a Saddlebred mare. Not all FCF horses were removed from the registry.

I got to see Coal Magic compete and hold his own quite well against the WBs at the USDF Region 1 Championships last year. He is really nice! I also have a friend that has a mare by him that I really like

if you want to go really old fashioned, and don’t mind a smaller horse, check out the Lippitt stallion Weathermont Ethan. I met him last summer at VT Morgan Heritage Days – he does a bit of everything and is so much fun! His babies are still young but are starting to come up as nice riding horses.

Unfortunately, my filly’s sire MtnTop Whippoorwill Tanek does not stand at stud to the public anymore. No show record due to blemishes but he and his foals are fabulous – nice movers and GREAT brains. Otherwise I’d say go look at him, too.

Subscribing to this thread. I can’t wait to see the difference stallions posted. I have a Morgan mare who is bred for the english division, but is more sport inclined. The plan is to breed her in a few years, I am hoping to find a Morgan stallion with older lines to bring back more strength, bone, and power to my mare.

honest question here

My mother showed a Funquest morgan in the early 70’s - who was 17h and looked remarkably like a saddlebred. I believe they also used to breed saddlebreds. So they went back to breeding Morgan-looking Morgans?

Stuart Hazard’s Funquest Morgans really had nothing to do with developing saddlebreds. They are classic old style Morgans. Look up the stallions The Brown Falcon & Flyhawk these were foundation stallions for this breeding program. I can honestly say I’ve never seen a 17h Morgan, but Funquest Morgans can be on the taller side 15.2+ I showed a 15.3h Funquest bred mare back in the 80’s. I can’t post pics here, but I’ll look for some links and post here.

Did he sell his farm?

A friend has a very solid dunalino Morgan stallion. Maybe this spring when he sheds out, I can take some pictures.

He is built like a tank. Very solid, large joints, wide chest and a good disposition. Kind of fun to see the comparisons in Morgan types sometimes.

Depends on which one you are talking about. The farm in MO where he was breeding Morgans/Saddlebreds was sold years ago. Last I heard he was in FL/KY and into Hackney Horses/Ponies and American Shetland Ponies.

I have always liked this beautiful little stallion. Performance-wise, in 2003 he finished the AERC championship endurance 100 mile ride, and the next day finished the 50 mile championship ride. Both rides were completed with the same heavyweight rider.

That’s what I thought. I was qoting a response that claimed “former owner” of FCF. Anyways no big deal just funny that FCF was even brought up in an “old style Morgan” thread when nothng from there has ever been considered old style

My gelding is out of Kells Above R Expectations at Flower Valley Morgans. His 1/2 siblings looks very similar to him and have been in the dressage ring as well.

I am also fond of Rafter Bar D Morgans. They have some great stallions!
