Hi all! Shopping for a new cooler for my mare. Unfortunately a nice wool one isn’t in the budget right now. Looking for something that’s mid range price wise and great at wicking moisture. Are the ones with the full necks attached really that much better? Thanks so much!
I like the Rambo Dry Rug Supreme, I like the neck cover, it allows drying him all over!
I like the full neck on the fleece cooler. Doesn’t have nearly the drying power of wool so the neck helps .
Thanks everyone! Scribbler, any particular brand?
I have an older version of this that I use at home.

I stay away from fleece when I can because of the static factor.
SmartPak often has some reasonably priced wool coolers, sometimes even in their clearance section. Personally, I can’t stand the fleece ones because you are constantly picking shavings and things off of them, everything sticks to them and they have static! I had a nice Baker fleece one and never used it, I always grab my pretty wool plaid one I got on clearance from SmartPak for $49!!!
Edited to add @comingback that’s exactly the one I’m talking about too! I got one on the half-price sale after the holidays a year or two ago.
I bought my mare a couple yrs ago qnd recently my pony, one of the amigo/rambo coolers with belly surcingles and full neck w buckles. It was great for days like today here in TN. 75 n rainy during the day but in the low 30s at night. Ugh… I dont clip so a sheet would make my mare too hot during the day, or even if id sheet her shed still get damp somehow even w it being waterproofed. N so when she came in around 5 r 6 pm, i would put her cooler on her since it buckled just like a blanket and it would dry her off and her sheet would either hang dry overnight or when i broke down n got her a second one theyd switch it out in the morning n put the dry one on her. Point being her soaking wet sheet could come off, the cooler can go out her to help keep her warm enough at night and dry her off and she would be good to go on the next morning i thinj my mares was a clearance color for 38.99, my ponys this yr was about 59, but still not too bad. You prol can find horse sizes cheaper, check ebay for sure!!!
Dover has a very nice wool cooler for $70. Decent quality and looks very attractive. Can get it monogrammed as well for additional cost.

Damn, they don’t have anything in the size I need or I’d be ordering today!
Dover also has a wool cooler a little cheaper than that one, and more sizes!

I’m not a fan of the Dover, SmartPak, and Centaur brand coolers at $120 and below. I think they’re so thin they don’t offer much other than the look.
There are two fleece cooler lines that I think are particularly good - Rambo’s Newmarket line and the Eskadron Dralon. Both of them are thick and plush and do an excellent job of wicking moisture to the surface. In addition, I find them much less staticky than other fleece.
Ebay may be your friend here.
Here is a list of coolers I’ve owned in the past 9 years (I’m sure I’m forgetting some):
-Rambo Grand Prix Fleece Dress Sheet - heavy fleece and nice looking, but too much static
-Weatherbeeta Fleece Square cooler - thin, didn’t wick extremely well
-Eskadron Dralon Fleece - extremely nice cooler, very heavy and wicked well. Cons: it shrank and no longer fit my horse when I washed it. They are difficult to find in the US. I found mine on ebay.
-Integrity wool dress sheet x2 - extremely nice, would buy again in a heartbeat
The inexpensive wool coolers are fine for the money, but if it were me I’d rather buy a used Integrity, Clothes Horse or Triple Crown sheet for a similar price.
My old horse really disliked static, so I tried to use less fleece on him. However, when wool wasn’t an option, Healthy Haircare moisturizer (the pink concentrate spray), was our best friend in the winter.
