Favorite Durable Heavy Cotton Lead Rope?

I have a problem with the cotton lead ropes I’ve been buying for the last few years (Weaver brand maybe). I hose my horse’s head off after riding in the summer, thereby getting the lead rope wet. I always end up with the brass bolt or bull snap “frozen” shut after a few months and cannot then take the lead rope off the halter. When I lunge in the halter, I have to tie the lead rope around the neck.

I’d love to find a heavy cotton lead rope 10’ long with a snap/bolt end that will not do this. Does anyone have a brand they love that stands up to this sort of abuse?

Check with boat stores that sell ski ropes. In the meantime, try a little WD40 every so often on your snap. A silicon spray is likely even better.

I buy the ones with the bull snap at Tractor Supply. They live on the fence in the weather and do just fine for a couple years.

You really need a solid brass snap to keep it from rusting. I generally buy these in person as I have found a number of the ones advertised are actually brass colored not solid brass. If you find a brass snap the next issue is that they fray. To avoid this I wrap electrical tape around the rope below the snap. This lead rope says solid brass but I would call first to make sure.

I buy a good heavy duty snap of my choice at Home Depot, then I buy whatever length of rope I want and braid the snap on myself. Lots of instructions online.
