Favorite Fly Mask for Thin Skinned Horse

I am on the hunt for the “ultimate” fly mask. My mare is very thin skinned and a lot of the masks will rub.

Cashel–can’t keep it on! I love the forelock hole and this one doesn’t rub, but it comes off in .00002 seconds.

Farnam–rubs under the jaw

Lycra ones–this has been nice, except it rubs out the forelock and if the horse gets wet in the rain, it will make rub raw

Weatherbeeta–also rubs under jaw by the velcro attachment

Any other suggestions so far?

Braid the fly mask on to keep the Cashel from coming off. Grab a piece of the mane and of the forelock and braid it a bit (tight at first and as they learn they can’t get the mask off, you can do a loose braid) then elastic band. It helps to keep it in place when they rub. I use this for grazing muzzles, too.

I have good luck with the Absorbine Ultrashield. It stays on and lasts for a whole season.

I have had good luck with the Absorbine masks as well. Another brand I have had good luck with is the Dover Rider masks and the price makes them even more attractive( around $13).

I haven’t tried the Absorbine ones yet! I’ll look into the Dover Rider ones too…haven’t seen those before.

Currently trying out an older Kensington…but I think we are going to have more rubbing on the jaw problems from the way the velcro sits.

Thanks guys!

Has anyone tried a Pessosa Coolwave flymask?

The Amigo might work for you? The velcro under the jaw is very broad.

I do find the horse size a little big, though.

I tried an Amigo and the sizing was way too far off. :frowning:

It’s for an Arabian with a tiny, almost pony sized head. Some of the cob sized fly masks swallow her whole too. :frowning:

Equivizor Fly Mask … Its hard domed over the eyes with ventilation holes, so it cannot collapse on the eyes as many other fly masks do … it also then allows any water to not go into their eyes during rain storms but to deflect and run off like a visor …

I like the Roma Bug Eye one. Cut a hole in it for the forelock if you need to. Everything else rubs my grey.

I’m so happy to have read this. Going to braid my cashel mask into the forelock tomorrow. New gelding keeps it on for 2 secs as well!
Now, I need fly blankets for both late pony and TB gelding. Gelding is very high withered 16.1 hand TB. Piny destroyed her Schneiders Dura-shield blanket in one week. Hardware and material ruined. She’s done this to two turnout sheets and her Amigo sheet is zip tied in front to keep it on.

Try the small Bucas. My fat headed cob wears a large, but was a medium in the Cashel. Bucas is the only mask that he can’t rub off, that doesn’t rub, and that actually fits his awkwadd head nicely.
