Favorite horse quotes

Just for fun-- what are your favorite horse quotes/quotes about horses?

Besides the one in my signature, I really like this one by Jane Smiley

“But what truly horsey girls discover in the end is that boyfriends, husbands, children, and careers are the substitute-for horses”

For me, any way, how true that rings!!!:D:lol::smiley:

Horse sense is the thing a horse has which keeps it from betting on people. ~W.C. Fields

I had to look that up to make sure I got it right and found this one:

People on horses look better than they are. People in cars look worse than they are. ~Marya Mannes

Of course, there is my signature, but the entire quote didn’t fit so here it is:

“Riding a horse is not a gentle hobby, to be picked up and laid down like a game of solitaire. It is a grand passion. It seizes a person whole and once it has done so, he will have to accept that his life will be radically changed.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

And this lovely sentiment from the end of Black Beauty, a peace that I fully intend for my horses to have for their entire lives:

“I have nothing to fear, and here my story ends. My troubles are all over and I am at home.”

All horses are unpredictable. All horses. All.

but i forget who said it.

Sorry, my horses don’t quote.

They don’t want to embarrass their humans.

“When the time has come to quit the track
And gracefully hang up my tack,
I’ll thank the Lord the life I led
Was always near a Thoroughbred”
~unknown~

And a funny one, the silent message from my mare when I made her a unicorn:

Which I interpreted as “I am revoking your pet privileges.”

“I am Mr. Ed.”

G.

“better for your daughter to be with a gelding in the field than a stud in the bushes” heard that a few times growing up!

His eye which scornfully glistens with fire, shows his high courage and his hot desire." wm Shakespeare

I’m sure that wasn’t written about a horse, but the first time I saw it, it was under a photo of a gorgeous stallion.

Also “In my opinion, a horse is the animal to have. Eleven hundred pounds of raw muscle, power, grace, and sweat between your legs. It’s something you can’t get from a pet hamster.” --Author Unknown

“There are only two emotions that belong in the saddle; one is a sense of humor
and the other is patience.”

The other is more of a poem than a quote but it’s still one of my favorites…

When I am an old horsewoman
I shall wear turquoise and diamonds,
And a straw hat that doesn’t suit me
And I shall spend my social security on
white wine and carrots,
And sit in my alleyway of my barn
And listen to my horses breathe.

I will sneak out in the middle of a summer night
And ride the old bay gelding,
Across the moonstruck meadow
If my old bones will allow
And when people come to call, I will smile and nod
As I walk past the gardens to the barn
and show instead the flowers growing
inside stalls fresh-lined with straw.

I will shovel and sweat and wear hay in my hair
as if it were a jewel
And I will be an embarrassment to all
Who will not yet have found the peace in being free
to have a horse as a best friend
A friend who waits at midnight hour
With muzzle and nicker and patient eyes
For the kind of woman I will be
When I am old.

The wind of heaven is that which blows between a horse’s ears.

(moments like this always make me think of this quote)

“I really don’t mind what people do, so long as they don’t do it in the street and frighten the horses.”
19th century British actress Mrs. Patrick Campbell.

“A horse is the projection of peoples’ dreams about themselves - strong, powerful, beautiful - and it has the capability of giving us escape from our mundane existence.”

“All equestrians, if they last long enough, learn that riding in whatever form is a lifelong sport and art, an endeavor that is both familiar and new every time you take the horse out of his stall or pasture.”
