Favorite Horse Show Snacks?

Protein bars, Kind bars, Orgain Organic protein shakes (Chocolate!), bananas and trail mix. LOTS of water and diluted/slightly sweetened tea.

I don’t eat a lot at shows and especially have a hard time eating before xc so I usually take a couple of the Starbucks protein drinks - they taste like coffee (a must) and have caffeine plus protein so at least give me some energy before I ride.

Other things I pack and sometimes eat (depends) but always share with friends/stablemates: protein and cereal bars of various varieties, baby carrots, yogurt, salt and vinegar chips, ginger cookies (actually, my horse eats most of those), salami, cheese (block or stick), and apples. I also pack a 5lb bag of carrots for my horse(s) and lots of water, gatorade/powerade, and of course beer

bourbon.

Lots of water, lots of Gatorade, some granola bars, and there’s a jar of lightly salted peanuts that lives in the trailer. I’m usually running and forgetting to eat, so I can cram a handful in my mouth on the way to XC for a last-minute bit of fat and protein that doesn’t leave me with a heavy belly right when I’m trying not to puke.

Since my son goes with his trainer to shows and all we have to is show up with food, I usually go all out. I try to make sure the whole crew has enough to eat and drink.
I usually pack the following:
Homemade Chicken Salad wraps
Hummus with crackers
Guacamole and chips
Cookies
Muffins
Some sort of fruit
Carrots and Mints for the horses
Water and Gatorade
And for when everyone is done:
Beer and Moscow Mules

I’ll bring the electric skillet for hot sandwiches… With our super powers combined!!!

Yes! Can I park next to both of you?

I can’t eat before dressage since I’m terrified and cotton mouthed but after that , yes!!

The reason protein shakes was included in my list is because I also get a nervous tummy. If I’m not riding real early, I’m fairly calm and can eat a light breakfast. But I know I’ll get hungry (and more edgy) before I ride. That’s when protein shakes can fill the tummy enough and give me a bit of energy without upsetting it. If I do have an early ride time, I can sip a bit of the shake and maybe a bite of granola, etc. without feeling like I’m going to lose it

Sounds good!!

Cracklin’ Oat Bran cereal. Good snack for humans and horses.

I generally like to show up with everything I need for food for the whole weekend. I’ll eat out or on the show grounds if I can get decent food, but nothing is worse than that being my only choice.

I’ve been seriously trying to cut down on carbs so the horse show food and snacks are a little bit of a challenge, but those Costco cheese and prosciutto roll ups are a life saver! Roasted and salted almonds, those little single serving waxed cheese rounds and another Costco favorite are the parmesan cheese wafer/crispy things. Little carrots with single serving ranch dressing tubs. And nuts lots of nuts.

Because everything is finger food I bring a big tub of Wet Wipes and keep it next to the food.

single use nitrile gloves are handy too if it is to cold for wipes.

For a day trip- I pack the cooler with good, easy-to-eat but somewhat healthy food. Some favorites:

  • Hummus and falafel
  • Veggies and hummus to dip
  • Salad
  • Hard boiled eggs
  • Drinks (beer, gatorade, water, a few sodas)

I usually bring some salty snacks too, like chips or cheez-its. I find it hard to eat breakfast on show mornings, but I’ll have coffee and a bagel, or sometimes I’ll put popovers in the oven the night before and set the oven on timer so they’re hot and ready when I get up. A delicious popover can usually motivate me to eat

If it’s a multi-day event and we’re stabling and staying somewhere, it’s a little trickier. I bring the usual chips/crackers and some sort of cookie. I’ll bring the cooler too, for drinks and keeping ice for post-XC icing, but I don’t trust it to keep food. So for overnight trips, I bring:

  • Granola bars
  • Beef jerky- doesn’t need to be refrigerated but it is a decent source of protein
  • Nuts- I love cashews and pistachios but they are pricy
  • Those little fruit cups (grapefruit and pineapple) and I’ll bring some apples or oranges to snack on

I hate buying horse show food because I can’t bear to spend $8 on a burger, but I’ll usually do it for lunch at a multi-day event, just to eat some real food.

Skratch Labs Exercise Hydration Mix… Regular Gatorade is too sweet for me. I prefer the Green Tea flavour in the morning because it has caffeine, then I switch over to one of the other flavours.

I also bring apple sauce pouches, protein bars, and an assortment of other bars like Lara Bars, Kind Bars, That’s It Fruit Bars, Clif Z Bars, etc… Depends on what’s on sale
