Favorite hot weather, long sleeve shirt?

I know most of you are probably gearing up for winter and are more concerned with fleece jackets and boot warmers, but I live in the land of perpetual summer and I’m hoping to catch some end-of summer/Mid-fall sales.

That being said, what is your favorite long sleeve, hot weather shirt. I have been using cheep-o “tissue tee-shirts” and those get the job done, but the durability is a bit lacking. And I usually have to toss a tank top on underneath to keep the light colors from being indecent, defeating some of the purpose of thin material. I’m looking to put a couple of nicer tech fabric shirts on the Christmas wish list.

I know that short sleeves are much cooler than long, but my Northern European skin does not take kindly to being 20 degrees off the equator. Sunscreen sweats off, and I forget to reapply.

My favorite is the Ariat version (called sunstopper I think). They wash well, have armpit vents, are shaped nicely, and have a neck that stays upright. I find that the kerrits brand shirt neck fall down so they don’t protect that area. The SmartPak brand shirts are too thick.

Of the various brands I have, including Ariat, Romfh, Kerrits, and EIS, I’ve found the EIS to be the most comfortable overall. The Ariat sunstopper is nice but isn’t Ice-Fil and doesn’t have the cooling factor the EIS and Kerrits have. Romfh and Ovation have a knockoff technology but the Ice-Fil is better in my experience. In a drier climate they’d probably be fine, but I have zero tolerance for humidity and need all the cooling help I can get. The Kerrits ones I have are short sleeved, so I can’t completely compare them to the long sleeve EIS, which was tops this summer doing barn chores and riding while I was pregnant and hotter than a big guy’s towel in a sauna.

Why not look into some non-horsey brands? They may be more cost-effective. I bought a handful of UPF sun shirts at Sierra Trading Post at the beginning of summer and love them all. They were all under $30 too. I’m not sure what they have available this time of year.

No Zone has some nice ones. Here’s one from Amazon with good reviews. I have a No Zone that’s very similar to SmartPak’s in style, just not quite as nice but also cheaper.

The only equestrian brand one I’ve splurged on is SmartPak’s SunShield, which (uh oh!) is on sale for $39 right now. It’s super soft, satiny to the touch, and very flattering (on me anyway). It is a little thicker than some of the others I bought though so I rarely use it to ride when it’s very hot but I love it anyway.

Kastel has an eBay store, Kastel Closeouts. The shirts run about $30.

I go to walmart and buy men’s oversized white long sleeve dress shirts inexpensively. The oversize gives me an airspace that really keeps me cool. Also, the extra length in the sleves keeps my wrist completely covered upto my gloves.

I burn really easy.

The Kastels are WONDERFUL.

I have Kastel and some Columbia brand - Kastel are way better. I got all of mine off the ebay store.

These are outdoors and hiking retailers. I ride in a ton of EMS tech-wick Long sleeve shirts all different colors and all seasons.

I am all about the long sleeved, collared shirts, as I have a history of skin cancer in my family.

I love my Kastel and my Ariat shirts. Great fit for me, cool and quick drying.

I also have 2 of the No Zone which are great for the price, but don’t have the arm vents.

My Kerrits and Ovation shirts are nice and light, and the fit (S) is more generous than the Kastel and Ariat.

My Romfh is lovely, and dries quickly but is a tad thicker so not for the hottest of days.

I also have a Haggerty’s custom shirt. I’m a bit disappointed in it, as the collar is a tad wonky, and the mesh undersleeves have started to pill after washing (the other brands haven’t, standard wash and dry). Otherwise it is comfortable and quick drying.

I have not yet tried EIS - that may be on my Christmas list!

At the end of this summer, I got a long sleeved Cool Blast icefil shirt from Dover. Nice quality and works great, plus it’s got UV protection. Not bad at all on price either.

I like the Bette & Court shirts, both long and short sleeved styles. They’re well-made shirts that wash and wear nicely and are more flattering to my figure than some of the others. They occasionally run sales on their website and my local tack shop carries them.

I have several brands of sun shirts - Kastel, Ariat, Noble outfitters and Cool Elements.

Kastel and Ariat are the winners for sure. Ariat is more affordable and I find the wear and tear on them to be the same.

The cool elements shirts I found didn’t keep my cool at all and the noble outfiiters fit a bit too snug and had the same issue. These two I warm on cooler sunny days so I don’t sweat to death!

I got a TS Ice-fill long sleeve at the end of the summer (in Canada that’s September, LOL) for half price and I wore it all the way through Sept.

First ride in it I ate dirt and got dragged a bit. Material held up beautifully and my sexy grass stains washed right out.

I’m too cheap to buy it full price but It was worth the half-price (~$60 I think) I paid for it. Looking forward to next summer as I’m already in my kerrits sit-warm-and-tight… sigh…

The Kastel shirts are amazing! I watch for them on Zulily.

Anything with IceFil IMO. I have several kinds and have not noticed any difference in cooling effectiveness. Kerrits run big compared to Ariat and some of the other brands. I take a M in Kerrits, L in most others. (I also like Kerrits because they are not as long; I’m short.)

My favorite so far is a blaze orange one from Dover. Size large, a little big on me.

If you know your size, keep an eye on Tack of the Day and its associated sites, as these shirts often come up on sale in the fall.

  1. Darn you for rubbing it in that you live where its still warm while I did chores this morning after a heavy frost and had to break ice on the water tank.

  2. You actually stay cooler if your skin isn’t in direct sun, so longer sleeves will ultimately keep you cooler (light colors and materials of course!)

I have a bunch of these, and a lot of them are on sale now. My favorites are the Tailored Sportsman and the Kastel, largely because the fabric is so nice, and they fit me perfectly. Others I’ve tried:

I have an Ariat Sunstopper I bought because the fabric pattern is pretty. I like it although it doesn’t have that silky feel of the first two. Nice cut and fit.

The Noble Outfitters offering (Ashley) runs small. Get a size larger than you normally would. Very snug, body-hugging fit.

The Ovation Cool Rider is a sturdy, budget-friendly offering. Works well for me, but if you have long arms, you will find the sleeves on the short side. I have three of these; they come in a lot of colors.

Kerrits sun shirts are cool and comfortable. I had to turn the cuffs up as they were a bit long for me. I have three of these. The fabric is very pleasant to the touch. No mesh under the arms, but I would say it doesn’t matter a bit. I live in south Georgia, so I am used to extreme heat and humidity.

The coolblast icefill shirts are my personal favorite. I think they are $79 but they are frequently on sale for much less at Dover. I personally wear them year round (on their own in the summer, under a jacket in the winter)
