Favorite Hunter Names

I’m doing a little research and wanted to find out, what is your favorite hunter horse name? Extra points for those one word names that have become popular.

Do they have to be famous/well-known or just horses/ponies we know or have competed against? Honestly, I think ponies tend to have the best names in terms of those that entertain me. I still get a kick out of the memory of a pony I competed against back in the day named “Smart As”. My immature teenager self definitely giggled every time the announcer had to read that name. I like unique names vs commonplace so can’t help with favorites that are popular for multiple horses.

There was a hunter in my area YEARS ago named “Happiness” and I loved both the horse and name.

About 20 years ago there was a stunning copper chestnut with high white stockings in that sea of plain old bays with a smattering of greys. It’s name was “Overdressed”. I rather liked that one. Good horse too.

I used to show against a hunter named Nonchalant and I really liked that.

I new a large “Paint” pony that was solid black and had no spots so they called him Supposedly Painted.

My old hunter was named It’s Only Money- show name Break the Bank.
I always like the drink names for hunters- Gin Fizz, Grey Goose, Ketel One.
Grey pony I show now is Absolut Magic

I loved “Strapless” (because she was truly as classic as a LBD), Incognito (for a plain looking bay who moves CRAZY GOOD and you never saw it coming), and Even Keel (for the most metronome-trotting horse I’ve ever seen).

For funny ones-- a palomino named McNugget and two I am saving for a c-r-a-z-y hairy, fat, round pony-- Tribble and Fizzgig.

I knew someone who owned 3 full siblings, all nice hunters: Educated, The Graduate, The Undergrad
I thought they were simple and had some class.

I tend to like one word names that are sophisticated, classic, simple yet attention grabbing at the same time.

Just thought of another one that is kind of popular in different variations… All Daddy’s Money. I also like the designer names like Gucci or Versaci which seemed to be popular at one time.

I also named a horse “Break The Bank” – barn name “Moolah”

Regarding the “solid color” paint’s name — I knew a paint who was solid colored – except for a small white spot under her tail (which qualified her to show as a paint). Her name was “Check my Cheeks”.

And one of my favorite hunter show names was “Them Apples”. And, yes, everyone liked him.

There’s a paint horse in the IHSA named Benjamin Moore who has been either Zone or National Horse of the Year. You should look up names from paint companies and see if there are any ones you like!

Teddi Ismond showed a loud Appaloosa named “Joseph’s Coat.” And for accountants, horses named “Debit” and “Capital Gains.” A local small pony, show name “Daddy’s Broken Budget”, barn name Budget. And my all time fave, a fancy small pony with a lot of chrome named “Batteries Not Included.”

Gal I showed against had My Affair < can’t remember what the horse looked like, but loved the name.
Also recall:
Nothing Artificial for a liver chestnut, no chrome.
Lost My Sock for a chestnut with 3 whites
Lake Effect < dappled gray
& one I could never figure out, but memorable: Cheesecake on Ash Wednesday
Can’t forget my own Hey, Vern! < bought & shown the year the Ernest movies first came out

Pony Hunters:
Inner Tube < fat black pony
Sweet Alyssum < pure white & temperament most definitely NOT
Fisher Price for bright chestnut w/chrome Small

One of my favorites was Pamela Carmichael’s junior hunter, Lansonette, I like simple, one word names. IIRC she was named after the farm where she was bred.

There was a local hunter back in the 60s with the show name Bankrupt Daddy.

I agree with vxf, my all time favorite name is strapless, not just bc she was classic but there was something daring about her as well.

I also really like Lindsay Maxwell’s horse Technicolor. I remember when my poor horse had to show against him at Thermal, I imagined he would be a flashy chestnut with chrome when I read the horse list before the show. Not at all, he’s a stunning dark bay that jumps in absolute technicolor.

My favorite pony name, hands down is Cabana Boy.

Not quite one name, but years ago there was a local stallion named “Bachelor Number 2”. I laughed every time I heard his name called.

I knew of a Paint baby named Spot Remover- can’t remember if he was solid or just conservatively marked.

There is a “Lost My Sock” in every, every, every circuit. Usually multiple ones.

Made me want to buy a horse with 1 sock and name it “Found Your Sock.”
