My all time top name on my “what I will name a really nice horse one day” list was Hush, until someone stole it and then made their horse famous and I’m still pissed about it, haha.
Next up is “Seen”, so hands off everyone!
For a one word nautically themed name I like “Shoreline”.
No argument here, love that! Though my guy’s name is “Soon” (JC and USEF) so maybe I’m partial.
Since we are doing “hands off” with names, here, the one I’ll claim for a future hunter is Splendid. Just a classic, round, bay gelding with some socks and a pretty head and neck.
I have had my horses change names. I think it’s the current owner’s prerogative. I may think the new name is drivel, but I respect that it’s their choice. I’ve also kept the breeder’s name in two instances, even one with a farm suffix*. No other name called out to me, and I didn’t mind their registered/breeder given names, so. My TB has had a few name changes. His registered name is awful, I didn’t like his previous owner’s name, and from the minute I met him, I had something else in mind. Other people may hate it, but it doesn’t really bother me.
*FWIW - I do hate when someone keeps the breeder/registered name, but changes or adds a farm suffix. Prefixes and suffixes are to denote breeders NOT owners, so changing just those is tacky, IMO. Change the whole darn name, I don’t care, but don’t add your suffix to something you didn’t breed.
I’m complicated, I know.
I did hunter shows when I was a youngster and loved “Superlative,” and for a horse that nobody could figure out a good name for (she had one of those godawful racing names like “Sheezafoxylady” or something equally trashy), they wound up going with “Open to Suggestions” which I thought was very clever for a bunch of 10 year old girls to have come up with.
I bought an OTTB who was by Big Spruce, and out of Stiff Queen. His registered name was “Stiff As A Board” (and he was).
Do you still think that names which refer to the sire and dam are worthy of being used as show names?
NSC - at first glance I thought I read Super laxative :o
Lord Helpus - I like names that refer to the parents, if they make sense. I can think of some pretty awful combos with those two though!
Generally I do prefer to stay with a registered name, but I really hated my OTTB’s and changed it. Even though his breeder was quite partial to it apparently, she told me it was originally rejected by the JC but she appealed and got it.
Just don’t do Les Bien… announcers have a tough time with it…comes out Jane Doe on a lesbian…
I had Souvenir, Charmed, Gentleman Jack and Spyglass. Knew a paint named Spotless.
My favorite pony…a jet black little stinker who moved like a million bucks, is named Sid Vicious!
Jump for joy- just made it up- great name for a showjumper
I thought this is cute because it can kind of mean 2 things.
Lord Helpus - I agree that is a bad name. Perhaps I should rephrase - “when ever possible I think the registered name is best”.
Keen & Sonder,
Mine was named by the barn rats at the farm I was getting lessons from. His name is “Prize Patrol” and he totally lived up to his name…
