Favorite hunter pony sires?

Sooo … can’t believe that I am posting this, but I am considering (considering being the key word ) breeding one of our hunter mares for a pony foal. Who are some of your favorites?

Not sure what size you’re after, but my personal favorite is Telynau Royal Charter

We bred to Land’s End Monarch this year. Love him!

I second that!!

Old Orchard Farm in Aiken has some really nice stallions. You would have to know your size wishes, etc.
Farnley Belshazaar is getting old- go for him!
It really is hard to give you too many ideas without knowing what your mares are sizewise, breedwise- etc.

The mare is a 16 h and blooded in her type. Based on her size, I think it would be most realistic to shoot for a large. Her dam is TB and her sire Dutch but he had heavy Anglo Arab influence.

You are only going to be able to shoot for a large. I don’t think you have any chance of getting anything smaller than that. Ideally, you are likely going to have to stick with a pony stallion under 13 HH to end up with a large pony hunter.

What are her weaknesses, her strengths, temperament, etc.? Knowing that will help in pointing you towards the appropriate pony stallion.

I really wouldn’t change anything about her. She is a lovely hunter type, correct, flat moving with good length of stride, and quiet minded. Would like her in a smaller package.

I would recommend Blue Who at www.sugarbrook.com (Sandy, his owner, posts on her as Sugarbrook). He is super quiet, his babies are super quiet as well and his babies have more than proven themselves in the hunter ring. He is also a fabulous little hunter mover. We have a pony hunter baby coming in April by him and are super excited! I also can’t say enough about Sandy. She was super easy to work with and extremely professional.

i’ve always liked jla sir william!

LOVE the Arnaby Farm stallions:

Rotherwoods Bo Jangles Ive always loved but being a Large I dont think he’d be the best bet for your mare. The buckskin stallion - Mynach Mystical I believe is a Medium so he would make more sense

Good luck in your search!

Blue Who!

Blue Who is the best! I have a gorgeous baby by him. He is sweet, beautiful, a and has great movement and jumping ability. He is the total package and all his babies are quiet and sweet as can be. My baby will sleep in my lap and she is only 7 months old. I can groom her and she stands perfectly still and she even let me walk her around with a tiny little saddle on her back. She could care less. If you want photos of my baby you can PM me. But contact Sandy about Blue Who “Hootie” She is the best pony breeder out there. No one better in my opinion. www.sugarbrook.com Good luck with your breeding! It is so exciting!

I ran across this stunning little stud colt, and think you need him, because you are not going to want to stop with one gorgeous pony baby. Have you not noticed that they are so beautiful, it almost hurts to look at their pics?!?

I would stick with pure welsh blood, (in my case I prefer section B), since crossbreed ponies will add to your height gamble.
And at 16h, I would not go higher than a small stallion. Especially if she has foaled before.

Thanks for all the great ideas. Is there a website for JLA Sir William?

She has had three Apiro kids. The first will probably mature around 16.2 h, but is medium framed and elegant. The other two are a little smaller and will be about the mare’s size, so I think the mare is bringing a lot of blood and refinement to the table. With a mare this size who is producing refinement bred to a small pony, are the odds pretty good that we will get a pony or is it still a roll of the dice? May be easier to buy a weanling …

I’m surprised no one has mentioned Blue Rain! He has been the leading pony hunter stallion numerous years for USEF (2004-2010). My last large was by him. Total package: great color, 10 conformation, hack winner, o/f winner, sweetheart, loved attention. I’m now STUCK on the Blue Rain line. His babies are all over the A circuit taking home ribbons.

EMC International (google for website) is who owns him (Well technically the mom of the professional who owns EMC is his owner but I don’t think she has a website).

My current horse is by Jet Blue who is by Blue Rain. Best animal I have owned to date. Would recommend him but 1. He is a large and 2. He was gelded after his second crop to be a hunter show pony. I got one of his last babies

Edit: Most Blue Rains are like pony sized horses. Still have the cute pony factor but especially if you want a large, the mini horse factor is important.

I have a smidge under 16hh mare by Alla’czar we are trying to figure out as well and have gotten some great suggestions from VirginiaBred. I bred my 14.2 hh TB mare to Monarch last year and the resulting colt is very cute (and will be a medium). I all ready purchased a breeding to Monarch for next year, but not sure what I am doing with it. I really do not want to use a grey stallion because I do not want a grey, otherwise I love Farnley Belshazzar. I may just go with him yet instead of Monarch…decisions, decisions… I wont go any taller than 12.2 on a stallion with this mare, I am too worried about a hony.

Because it is widely known that Blue Rain does not ship well (transported semen)…and hasn’t for many, many years. The OP is in Oklahoma, so I doubt it is feasible to ship her mare to Maryland for on farm inseminating.

Blue Who, which several of us have recommended is sired by Blue Rain.
